Today March 29, 2005, the classic Home Improvement Sets and the sets from the "Making of the Haunted Mansion" attraction were destroyed to make the way for... nothing.

That's right folks. The one of a kind sets were completely demolished and in a dumpster behind the Special Effects Water Tank at the Studios.

All that was left from the Backstage Pass sets were two table saws. Most likely they will be relocated to the scenic shop.

I knew this day would come but just not so soon!

It was so sad to see all of it in wreckage. In case you are wondering nothing was salvagable, it was all completely destroyed.

Anyone who more or know why this happened?

OK... DISCUSS...

I'm just wondering why, or much "stuff" Disney is supposed to keep? Even though they may have lots of space, with which to work, I don't want them to keep all of this old stuff. It has no value or use for day to day operations. Therefore, they are taking up space, and will become an eyesore at some point.

Companys do this all the time. Do you think they kept all the Jurassic Park sets? No.

Which brings up and interesting question. Why EXACTLY did Disney have to shut down the 20k ride? I've heard stories of people dying from having ashtma attacks, heart attacks, etc, with there being no "exit" strategy during the ride.

Secondly, there are more important battles to fight. I for one, during the backstage tour, have always said to my Wife, why are they keeping all of these vehicles out here to rust away? I understand that they are important pieces of movie memorabilia. That's fine. But couldn't they have build a walk-thru museum for those vehicles? And then found better attractions/sites to put in their place? While I enjoy seeing some of these items, I found it disheartening that they are left out in the open to the elements to be destroyed by weather.

But yes, I too don't have problem with Disney getting rid of old sets, movie items, etc, when they serve no real purpose.

While this doesn't really affect me much, I am sorry to hear it bummed you out. We all have little things that we love about WDW and would be disappointed if they were changed.

I can see where you are coming from. But what like most people said, they had to make room. It is a shame that they had to demolish the sets. Hopefully better sets will fill their spots in the future.

The scenic carpenters are (most likely) I.A.T.S.E. union members. If this is the case than they can't and/or don't reuse anything. This is the same case with Broadway. If nothing is saved than everything needs to be built; that means more work for the scene shop. I would love to have a piece of the Haunted Mansion set. The work in there was unbelievable. This probably won't make anyone feel any better but it might hope to answer the question better.

Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I probably wouldn't even have believed someone if they told me Home Improvement sets were at MGM  No big loss, imo...I didn't even know either of those sets were still there.

Okay guys, let's not let this one get out of hand. I personally felt no attachment to these sets, but the OP obviously did. I'm actually a bit surprised that they lasted this long. Maybe this is a sign of new things to come? (crosses fingers)
