Booking Disney on a Budget?

Nice video. Based on your accents, I am guessing you are from the UK. Europeans get great deals on park passes to begin with. You mention budget, but everyone's budget is different. Some people cannot vacation at Disney without spending more than the last person in their social circle to keep a status position within that societal circle. Yes, believe me, this is definitely a factor with some groups here in the States. It doesn't matter how much they have to spend, they spend it to keep a status level.

For me, doing Disney on the cheap is my philosophy. I do that by saving in every place I can. Driving ($150 round trip) vs flying (~$750). That is a big savings for us. Next is the room savings. We stay offsite when the price difference is huge. We have a 1BR in a Deluxe resort for $560 for 7 nights. The cheapest Disney room is $1,120, 33% the size, and no kitchen. Between those two savings, we are at $1,060. Eating at the room, cooking meals, and eating offsite will save us another $500 at least. $10 for QS meal, $50 for TS, for 3 people for 7 nights is $1,250. The DDP is $1,615. I can buy groceries and eat offsite for $500 for the week. That is another $750 in savings (~$1,800 in savings now). Base tickets for 7-days is $1,100. Some savings can be had at other places, maybe $20 a ticket. With the savings I already made and add in tickets, I can get Platinum Plus APs and still save about $300 overall. The discounts from the AP save another ~$300 each trip ($150 for Memory Maker), $140 in parking, and merchandise discounts.

Thanks for your reply :) some great tips there.

We are going to try upgrading our 21 day ticket to an AP as we are looking to go more than once a year. How do you go about getting the AP holder discount on a package?

Thanks so much.

I don't know how to do packages with APs. When I get them, I usually stay offsite because you can get SO MUCH more for a heck of a lot less. Comparable rooms at WDW compared to WDW the difference is measured in $1,000s. For my stay through WDW for an almost equivalent resort (WLV), the savings are almost $4,000 for the 7-nights ($4,536 vs $560). You can get the room for about $3,200 through a DVC renter (271 points for $12-$13/pt).

With an AP, I just can't fathom staying on site with the cost savings staying offsite (as long as you have a car). Now, in a slower season, we may splurge for a DVC rental in a studio on later trips when we only have the room cost.
