The SSD hard drive surprises me, seems like overkill. It's a simple enough application that they should have been able to get away with an embedded device with a little bit of Flash memory.

I would suspect... That is just a twist if words when someone tried to describe it to someone. Just like they've said 'GPS' before. Such applications would typically use a industrial grade cf disk or sd card

it is overkill... but in a stroke of 'genius' it was actually planned for functional expansion.....

There are quite a lot of possibilities with the right system in place:
-The table could read your name from the new RFID wristbands, and the server could know the first name of everyone before they even get to your table.
-The server could bring you a "magic scroll" (mini tablet) for you to read your bill and pay, allowing you to split up the bill however you want.
Those are just two off-the-top-of-my-head ideas.
As for the warmth aspect, we ate dinner at BoG on Tuesday the 13th after scoring a walk-up reservation during the previews. After sitting down, my friend (who is quite sensitive to temperature changes) commented on how warm it was in the restaurant. Having just read the first couple posts of this thread the night before, I commented on him possibly getting "the hot seat". Sure enough, he felt under the table and found that the underside near his legs was very warm. He switched seats with someone else in our party.
Our server happened to arrive as they were switching and I commented on them rearranging because of the hot spot. She then commented that she'd heard management was working on a solution to that problem.

Can't reply to the RFID technology as I haven't had the opportunity to be there as a eating guest yet but As far as the CMs trying to "break" the rules, I'm sure that it true. CMs are generally told to try and break the system to simulate what guests may try and do during a normal day. I know my roommate got to do stuff like that when she was a lifeguard at TL.

Ha! That’s great. I’m a computer programmer and we run these types of tests at work also. I’d say about 20% of the programming code written is for the defined task, the other 80% is to prevent an end user from doing something they shouldn’t. Then despite all the work that goes into making a program foolproof, these tests come along and someone does the one thing you didn’t consider.
