It really was because of paint fumes...
That said, the hat does look pretty sweet now.

It consisted of the major floats, without the trampolines and traffic cones, passing by while the song Celebrate Good Times played continuously and the green army men spoke to the crowd. The dancers performed on the ground while the floats proceeded in a slow moving parade-style with no stopping. The parade lasted about 12 minutes, and it was enjoyable but not nearly as diverse and energetic as the normal BPB presentation. The biggest drawback was the lack of excitement from not having trampolines, pogo stilts, scooters, etc. to work with and the repetitive music loop consisting of one song.
Oops, my mistake. I don't know if this is the correct answer about the HSM B-mode, but I can say that when I returned to DHS on Tues (they were still painting the hat, and there was a small film crew outside of American Idol's theatre), HSM3 was performed on the Streets of America instead of in front of the Sorcerer's Hat. Other than the location, the show seemed the same. That's the BPB b-mode. The poster was curious about (as am I) the HSM b-mode.
