Birthday party, cheesecake, PhD, Boom! A Christmas 2013 PTR

Sorry for the esoteric R.E.M. lyric subject line -- it was stuck in my head (and apropos).

Hi, I'm Minnie Sue (okay, just Sue) and I have what some might term an unhealthy love for Minnie Mouse. Some would term it that -- but I'm guessing on this forum it would be termed a healthy, nay, a robust, even, love of Minnie Mouse. Well, I have Minnie ears, a Minnie watch and I buy the occasional pair of Minnie pajamas. It's not like I have a stalker shrine of Ms. Mouse photos taped up in my closet or something. Okay, so I bought the Dooney & Bourke Minnie purse. Yes, I'm obsessed! Jeez, you dragged it out of me.

This is me with my husband of 20 years, Eddie, who is a huge Star Wars fan (we're both Disney geeks), on our FIRST trip to WDW in May of 2012. First, can you believe it? (Well, he went when he was 3 and doesn't remember it; I grew up in a non-Disney home. It's hard for me to talk about, as I'm sure you can imagine. They were...Warner Bros people.)

We did our fair share of traveling early in our marriage. Perhaps more than our fair share, because after 10 years or so of trying, we finally made peace with the repeated evidence that we were never going to have children. We grieved for a couple years, and then realized that, without children, the money we'd have to travel! Why, we'd be wayfarers! Wherever we lay our head is home! Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond! We took a leisurely tour of Mexico (Guanajuato's pretty sweet), a theater trip to NYC and hit a few border states (Missouri has legs) and then, at age 37, with no more magic than the usual stuff (*wink*), 16 years after we were married, the EPT read that our own little Mouseketeer was on his way. Whaaaat??? He's now almost 5. We still stare at him in wonder every day.

So to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in May, 2012: we went to Disney world! And we took this little Mickey fanboy:

Jonah, age 3, May 18, 2012 at Chef Mickey's

Our May trip was the 17th-22nd, we stayed at the Port Orleans FQ (loved it) and hit the MK (two days), Epcot and Hollywood Studios. I skipped AK because my son and I are avid zoo goers (the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is glorious, despite its sad lack of Panda bears and dolphins) and I figured AK was something we could miss to maximize time at the MK. I see now that I was creating a valid argument for returning as soon as possible: "We didn't visit the Animal Kingdom! I mean, that's 1/4 of the parks! It's obvious we have to go back ASAP!"

We rode every ride in the MK except Space Mt (my son was too short) and Pooh (my kid thought it looked "bor-wing," LOL). His favorites were the carpets and Splash Mt (he is fearless). We had ADRs at (among others) Chef Mickey's, Crystal Palace, 'Ohana and Rose & Crown. We did not do Epcot justice (flew through the WPs and missed Soarin' all together) and arrived at HS too late (afternoon flight arrival) for TS Mania, bah. It was a great starter trip. We learned our way around, what we'd like to do again and left plenty to be a new experience for subsequent trips.

Plus, the week before the week of Memorial Weekend was a GREAT time to go. The crowds were very manageable (only big crowd was in front of the castle for "Wishes," we made a rookie mistake there) and we arrived early and used EMH and walked onto Pan, Pirates, and others.

389298_3928306335706_297343734_n.jpg

Jonah took his Daisy, his favorite of his Mickey Friends plush, to meet Daisy Duck. He wasn't into doing too many meet'n'greets, but he did get the rest of the Mickey Gang and Woody & Jessie PhotoPass'd.

So this brings us to: Christmas 2013

My husband's birthday is Dec 30 and December will mark the end of his PhD coursework (yay!!!) and he is determined to celebrate by trying every flavor of cheesecake (his fave) in the World (I doubt this will happen, but he'll at least hit the tie-dye at Pop and White Chocolate Cheesecake at Le Cellier). Plus I just want to wake up on Christmas Morning at Disney World in our matching pirate pajamas, put on purple & gold boas and feathered masks and take a family Christmas pic in front of faux New Orleans holiday decor, because I'm that Mom, and is that so wrong?

20130215_101354_zps2bb360f4.jpg

"That Mom" tendencies: I became obsessed with planning a Christmas week trip while scrapbooking our 2012 trip; this HS photo op was one of my favorite pages. I really should have told him to duck down a wee bit, haha.

I know the crowds are excessive the week of Christmas, I know the parks hit capacity on Christmas Day, I know timing, commando touring and ADRs are a MUST to do even part of the things you'd like to do to make your Christmas merry and bright. But we're laid back, chill people (despite my THAT MOM tendencies) and make our own fun. My (then) three-year-old son didn't cry, get cranky or throw a fit once during 4 days of Disney. We're Disney automatons who run on pure Pixie Dust and Dole Whip. We can DO this!

We're booked for 5 days at the FQ with a 5-day Park Hopper, and I can't wait til June to make our ADRs!!! Things we'd like to do our Christmas Week Trip:

  • Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party
  • Jedi Training Academy (that's a daily thing, right?)
  • Drop the boy at the Neverland Club and have wine & a great meal at Citricos for my husband's birthday.
  • Candlelight Processional (if NPH is the narrator again I will explode with happiness, die, and be reanimated as a Holly Jolly Zombie by the joy of a Christmas Musical Miracle)
  • New Fantasyland
  • Geek out with My Disney Experience and apps
  • Breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table, because my son is obsessed with Cinderella. In fact, he'd like to meet the following princesses "in this order": Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Snow White, Ariel and Jasmine. "And also Jake," LOL. (We're also going to try Askerhus, obvs.)
  • I think he'll be tall enough for Space Mt in Dec! (My husband's 6'2", surely my then kindergartner will be a giant...I'm 5'1", Stitch is tall to me.)
  • Be Our Guest
  • The World Pavilions because I completely missed Morocco and Italy the last time. And I didn't get any booze! Bring on the overpriced holiday re-branding and glow cubes!
  • Maelstrom because it sounds hilarious.
  • The Pirate League
  • Touring the various resorts to see the decor
  • Putting $ monthly on my Disney gift card. We are buying no presents for each other pre-Christmas (the trip is kind of the thing) but I want to buy each other totally indulgent stocking stuffers in DTD and Main Street! It's obvious that I need Mickey-shaped pancake molds!)
  • A sleigh ride at Ft Wilderness. We went to FW's Campfire Sing-a-Long last year, and it's something I see very few people mention in TRs. There was no extra cost for non-FW guests, we met Chip'n'Dale, made s'mores and watched "Three Caballeros" on the outdoor screen. It was one of the most magical, low-key, peaceful parts of our trip!

Ft Wilderness Campfire Sing-a-Long. Hint: Not the real Chip'n'Dale

318166_3928311655839_1353399290_n.jpg

S'mores!

And you know, as long as we get a Mickey Bar, buy some ears, see some Christmas decorations and come across at least one of Jonah's chosen Princesses (and Jake), we'll have a great time. After all, this alone is reason to go back to WDW:

Hello, old friend.

So that's my Dec 2013 PTR (...er, which was mostly a truncated 5/12 TR?) and I will update it as things progress (which they will do SLOWLY, as it is only February!)

Any tips (especially for Epcot on Christmas Day) are appreciated, random rambling about your love for Disney, Christmas or Dole Whip also welcome.

I'm finally here!!:) You had to start this thing right when I left town and didn't have internet. I'm super excited that you're going at Christmas! I could never take DH during those crowds. He doesn't do crowds! I also prefer my buffet's for breakfast! I'm hoping for early Crystal Palace ADR in 2014. Animal Kingdom is really awesome! You are going to love it! Where are you going to stay when you go to the "other" park ; ) ?

Unfortunately, Alabama high schools focus a lot on their sports programs so if you want to teach you have to be able to coach something also.

Yes, Oklahoma is similar (for history) or at least it was when I was in HS 20 years ago!

We're both here!!! I totally forgot to mention that I was doing Universal for a couple of days, too. I'm booking that next month. They had a package with La Quinta (that's Spanish for "Next to Denny's!" -- Eddie has been telling that joke for 20+ years). Hopefully it's still available, because it was a great price!

I liked CP food (we did a lunch ADR) but Jonah isn't a big Pooh fan, and neither are Eddie or I. I love Eeyore, but the character interaction was pretty much wasted on us, so I doubt we'll do it again, unless I just want to get into MK early and CRT isn't available. I'm so excited for AK!! I hope we can take a joint trip one year!

Crystal Palace-- I mostly just want to get in the parks early. Get the castle pic without the crazy crowds. I did Crystal Palace before Pooh in '80 and '92. My 8 year old self thought CP was the fanciest restaurant ever!! So its a little bit nostalgia as well. I considered CRT and it is quite a bit more expensive... and when we go back in 2014 I will have 4 Disney Adults. That Disney rule is irritating, Olivia at 10 is not an adult.... Anywhoo, hope the La Quinta deal is still available... Though it seems life you have to stay on sight to qualify for fast pass. It's either that or maybe you have to pay extra fee? I don't remember:oops:

There was one day in May we did Rope Drop and still got the castle pic without the crowds. We didn't even realize it was a big deal at the time, haha. I thought the CP was beautiful! If I hadn't felt impatient to get back to my dessert while instead helping Jonah feign interest in Tigger, I would have loved it, snicker. I just found out about the Disney "adult" age reading these TRs! That's crazy! 12 I could understand, but 10? Yeah, you have to stay on site for the Univ FP. We may end up paying for it, we may stand in line. Still researching that. The La Quinta deal is still there...*fingers crossed*

Madeline was barely 10 last May. I bought her an "adult" park ticket. However, She still ordered from the kids menu. I won't be able to do that next time. She will be twelve and (if she continues to grow like she has) as tall as me. Olivia will be 11 and most likely unwilling to pretend to be 9. Food will be a lot more expensive. Adult buffet's are so much more than kids.... not fair :(

This, honestly, is why I'm a fan of the Dining Plan. I have read every pro and con, and with 3 of us (one of us still qualifying as a child for the next 4 years) it works out for us to do the DDP for event dining & character meals, because I'm one of the "if I pay for it in advance, I don't think about how much I'm spending" people. I know there are people who are to-the-penny "I saved $$ paying day by day," and Lord love 'em, the World needs all kinds.

True story: We had done a mid-day clothes change before that was taken, and since it was the only pic of the 2 of us taken that day, I honestly didn't realize that we were dressed like 2 scoops of sherbet until my PhotoPass pics came in.

I play vacation a lot (don't judge). Since we are a family of 5 there are limited options staying on property. We can't do a value (unless it is a family suite). I really have no desire to stay at any of the All Stars that have family suites. I'm also not a fan of the AoA family suites (especially for the price) Some rooms at the moderates fit five-- some don't. I've played, "Pretend we are staying in a moderate with the Disney Deluxe Dining Plan with Park Hoppers" with 4 Disney Adults:eek: and 1 Disney child .. it is not good. Cause I know I can book us into 5 nights at Seralago for what one night at a moderate would cost. Sooo, until we win the lottery it will probably be off property and very few ADR's for us. Different strokes for different folks :p Maybe after I graduate and have a job I'll feel all fancy and rich and book us an onsite stay... who knows.

I was thinking about that after we talked about the 10 year old adult thing, how expensive it must be for a family of 4+ to stay on property. And pfft to playing vacation...I do it all the time! I've planned out our vacations through 2016! Winter 2013: Disney Christmas; Summer 2014 Machu Picchu/Cusco, Peru (this is Eddie's 'Congratulations, Dr. Eddie trip,' and it costs just slightly more than Disney, haha!); Summer (well, May) 2015: Disney; Winter 2016: Christmas in NYC. (I'll be working again during all of those trips. We're swinging Christmas this year through careful, careful budgeting and, sadly, just having one kid. Not that he's not plenty of kid for us!). If I ever write that novel and get a fancy advance (does that even happen anymore?) I'll take your family, your mom and your sister and we will do a no-holds-barred trip! Until then, I will happily stay at moderates and budget carefully.

We have lots of trips planned in our heads. Tommy really wants to get back to Europe. Madeline wants to hit Prince Edward Island after reading her first Anne book and see the Globe Trekker episode that feature PEI. I'd like to do a theater NYC trip..... So many places to go.... Ha ha! We haven't decided were we are headed this summer. Maybe Yosemite.

December 2013 Updates:

  • To end our Christmas trip, we are now booked for one night (12/27) at the La Quinta Orlando--Universal Studios with a package that includes early entry to Islands of Adventure and one day tickets for Islands. We're really only interested in WWHP, Spiderman and Seuss, so this is perfect for us (our then-to-be five year old is oblivious to most of the characters at Univ). Driving this time has really opened up some flexibility.
  • Since we're staying 5 nights at WDW, I thought about booking a couple of the nights at a different resort (we're at POFQ, as we were last time) just to try something new. However, Christmas week is not the best week to look at rack rates, and there really aren't discounts. I'm ruling out GF because I'd rather spend my money on other things, but if I did resort hop, which would you guys suggest?
  • And since there's not much else I can do right now but wait (the agony of booking early) I'm doing other Disney things to pass the time (like haunt this place). I'm in the process of redecorating my four-year-old son's room from his Monkey nursery/toddler room to a Disney bigger kid room:
Monkey Jungle Toddler Room:

Love the new room! I think Coronado Springs Resort is really beautiful. But it is HUGE and it is the convention hotel... My favorite Deluxe is Beach Club. Gorgeous and you can walk to Epcot entering through the International gateway. If we ever stay on property I think I would rent DVC points and stay Beach Club or Boardwalk. Renting DVC points seems to be cheaper than rack rates... at least according to the chart I looked at via "David's Vacation Rentals" I think that's what its called.

Christmas week is crazy so I'd stick with what I know and love! No getting lost no confusion no stress!

I think you might have something there. Plus, I'd have to check out/check in on Dec 24 or 25, and I really want to put up Christmas decorations, so moving those would be pointless.

Thanks! After collecting Disney stuff for him for so long, it was surprising how a paint job, Disney comforter and framed posters tied it all together!

I looked at Beach Club. I don't think we'll do it this trip, but it's definitely something to look for in the future, especially if i can find the May discounts again!

It's June 25...my 180 days! I was up at 4:30 CST to make my ADRs for my Christmas week trip. You know, I do, with no irony, wish I was the sort of person who took a spontaneous approach to visiting the parks and to whom a churro and a Diet Coke was an experience. But I'm just not. The anticipation, touring plans and ADR planning, rescheduling and booking are half the fun for me. Plus it would drive me nuts to get to a park and say, "Okay, what do we want to do first? Where are we eating?"

I couldn't have gotten better ADRs for Christmas week, OR had better service from the CMs when I was stymied by the online system. It was a truly magical (super early) morning.

Be Our Guest -- 12/22 at 9:00 pm (squee!!!)
Fantasmic! with Mama Melrose -- 12/23 at 12:05 pm*
Tusker House -- 12/24 at 8:00 am
Yachtsman Steakhouse -- 12/24 at 6:45 pm
Akershus -- 12/25 at 8:05 am
Cinderella's Royal Table -- 12/26 at 8:05 am
Tony's Town Square -- 12/26 at 8:15 pm

*I wanted Brown Derby, but for some reason Mama was all that was available. I'll keep trying to modify.

Still waiting for (hopefully) 12/25 Candlelight Processional with Garden Grill (for my son's Chip and Dale obsession) and the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party. But if I only succeed in getting CRT and BOG for my son (he's into princesses, he likes the animated ladies) and Yachtsman for my husband's bday/graduation celebration (my son will go to the Sandcastle Club) it will still be nothing but sheer happiness.

Happy sigh. 180 days to go!!!

I just read through your whole ore trip report and I love your to do list and your reasons! Your are so funny! And it almost made me cry reading about how you accepted being childless and then became a Mom!
And Jedi training, seriously it made my sons year, he is a small 5 year old and he fought Darth Vader, for real!!
I am looking forward to reading your report!
Happy planning!

Thank you!! My son (he will be 5 in August) goes back and forth about the Jedi training. Some days he's into the idea of the light saber, and some days he doesn't want to "get up in front of all those people." So we'll see how that turns out! I am excited about writing my TR! I've found so few detailed reports about Christmas week, and I look forward to giving my impression of the crowds, the (possible) roll-out of MyMagic and navigating my various ADRs around long lines and FP times!
