I'm old enough to remember when tonsils were a focal point when a sore throat was involved. There weren't many kids in my era that didn't have the old snip process done. Mine were removed before I was 6 years old. It did end the sore throat and fevers and I don't remember ever having much in the line of sore throats since then. Now, obviously, that is the last thing they look for. Where's Dr. House when you need him!
What I remember from that whole experience was being sick a number of times before the surgery, my mother holding me when I was sick, the doctor making a house call to give me a penicillin shot, (yes, house call's were common back then), having a Michigan style hot dog and chocolate milk on my way to the hospital, the rest is a blur except for being given ether and having a swirling vision in my head and then waking up only to vomit which was a common occurrence when ether was used. Good times! I also find it amazing that I can remember that from nearly 70 years ago and can't go from one room to another now without wondering why I went there.
