My daughter has just returned home from school and tells me that her friend has said that Disney is closing BTMR because it breaks down too often. I'm sceptical - is she being teased ?

I'm pretty sure she's being teased. They wouldn't close down one of the main rides in 4 of their parks around the world. The one in dsney land will be down for a few weeks so they can investigate the accidents that have been happening there, but I don't think it will be down for good.

Jim Hill just posted an article today as to why BTMRR will NOT be closed down. The gist is that this is a franchise attraction in all 4 parks and to close it down would cause ill will at ALL of their parks, much as SirGoofy just said.

She's definitely being teased. Big Thunder is a popular and profitable ride and Disney would not close down a major ride in each of its four Disney's. Jim Hill has an interview today with a cast member who spoke about working the ride. You can read it here:

Its important to recognize that the accidents have been happening at Disneylands Thunder Mountain. WDW's Thunder does not have an excessive amount of downtime and has not experienced any of the problems of DL's.

I think its time for a major rehab for BTMRR in DL. No one deserves to get hurt on a roller coaster while on vacation.
Maybe, but is the problem a physical or systematic issue with the coaster or is this attributable to cast members?

I'm not sure it can be 100% quantified to one or the other, but I have a feeling that we're looking at an employee issue. At that point, it becomes a question of why. Experience, training, fatigue, lazy, etc.

Other thoughts?

That could be the reason. But I heard it was a computer problem not a cast member.

I've never been to DL, so I don't really know how the two BTMRR's compare. Are they pretty much the same i.e. same track lay out and loading/unloading area?

If they're too much alike it is rather odd that things keep happening in CA and not in FL...

They are very different in track layout, but similar in theme and have have similar show scenes. WDW's is a little better of a ride IMO and I think it is a little longer ride.

no way they would close it down! haha it's a very populaur ride...they will most likely investigate problems and tehn reopen (in DL) and keep the one in (wdw) open.......b/c there has been no problems with it!

I don't think that they will close down BTM, even at the one at DL. If they closed down every attraction that injured or killed someone, then Tom Saywer's Island would have been turned into another food court a long time ago.

I heard that DL and WDW's BTM is pretty much identical. The only difference is that WDW's BTM hasn't killed or injured anyone.

Ok, the DL and WDW versions are very very different. Trust me. While the style of steel coaster is similar, the tracks do not follow the same path. The DL has only one loading area while the WDW has two. Just because the theme is similar does not make the ride itself identical. Also, can we please confirm the age of the girl who's friend at school said it was closing. Are we really worried because someone's daughter's friend at school heard a rumor?
