Well, after 5 visits to WDW in the last 3 years (including 3 visits this last calendar year) we are headed to the West Coast!

I had to fight through so much negativity, "oh, it's so much smaller you won't have fun..." etc etc etc

Now let the planning begin!

Only issue... we are headed 3rd week of February when New England has school vacation. Are Californians out that time of year as well?

Wow, that's fantastic! If you need help with anything, don't be afraid to ask.

Californians are definitely in school in February. Christmas vacation lasts until February in New England?

Sounds like you are ready! Is this your first trip out to the DLR?

We are leaving Massachusetts tomorrow A.M. for our First trip to DL.
Have Been to WDW 2x a year since at least 1999.also been on 7 DCL trips and Vero Beach twice.
I have also heard the stories about being too small, but now with California Adventure it seems to be twice the fun. Also gonna hit the Pacific Ocean while we are there:)

Congrats on your trip! My only opinion is that february is very cold and rainy so dress accordingly. It is definately off season though.

We wish! For some odd reason we have a break in Feb... Christmas break is usually 9 days or so.

You have to forgive us Southern Californians. To us 50 and overcast is considered cold and rain is a sign of the impending apocalypse. :)

My friend, who lives in Chicago, didn't believe me when I said it was going to get cold when she moved here for a few months. Sure enough, when November hit, she was freezing. Same for her boyfriend when he came to visit her from Chicago. He was freezing as well. I met an east coast CM at Disneyland once, and he had on gloves, and other things. I asked him why he wasn't used to the cold here, and he said the cold in SoCal is different. He said it's brisk and hits your bones. Even my dad, who's from Brooklyn, NY gets really cold here.

I don't care what anyone says.... The cold in SoCal is real.

Raven, it depends on where/what school district in SoCal. I've taught down here in San Diego County for going on 25 years. MOST school districts down here take 2 weeks at Christmas.

For the third week in February, we have one local school district (the one I live in) that will be off that week. They call it a "ski break", and it's usually the week of President's Day. There's only one other district in San Diego County (that I know of) that takes that week. Most districts take either 2 three-day weekends in February (to commemorate both Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays), or one 4-day weekend for the same. My district has done either one for years.

I checked the calendar for the LA schools, and they only get Monday off for Presidents Day... you should be good!

The cold is all about what you're used to... when we went last November, we were in Palm Desert for a random cold snap. It was our very first cold weather of the season because it hadn't gotten cold yet in Buffalo before we left for LA, and it was 70's and 80's the whole time we were in LA. Even though we brought winter coats and gloves out to the desert, we didn't want to spend any time outside at night in the 50 degree weather. It was toooo cold for us. Now if there were a random 50 degree day in the middle of our Buffalo winter, everyone would do naked cartwheels outside. :jawdrop:

Be careful. The weeks around Presidents Day is always busy at Disneyland; schools in Seattle and Portland and Vancouver BC get a full week off then and families there either go skiing locally or head down to SoCal and Disneyland. The parks go extended hours that week, and then often extend closing day-of due to even bigger crowds than planned. If you avoid the Presidents Day holiday weekend by 6 days on either side of it, you should be fine.

I lived in New England for several years, so I know what winter is like there. If you luck out in February in SoCal you will have sunny skies and 72 degrees with chilly nights. If you get "bad weather" it will be 58 degrees and overcast with rain showers or drizzle, with chilly nights.

If it does get cloudy and wet, the locals will cower in their homes in absolute fear and won't go outside, while the freeways will be littered with car wrecks by people who don't know how to drive in light rainfall and haven't inflated and rotated their tires in years, if ever.

SoCal locals also don't have proper clothing for rain; the upper and middle classes trudge about absolutely miserably in soggy sweatshirts or jean jackets and canvas shoes, while the lower classes use cheap fleece blankets pulled over themselves thinking that's what will keep them warm and dry. It's pathetic to watch them in winter, as if they have no idea that the last 30 years of technological advances in water repellent outerwear existed.

A rainy day in February is a perfect time to enjoy Disneyland with light crowds and proper outerwear! Enjoy!
