Beware Croc Wearers...They Are Dangerous

I read an article today online that said, and I quote.

"Today we learned that not only are they ugly, Crocs are also dangerous. The popular imitation clogs have recently been causing accidents on escalators in Japan__so many, in fact, that the Japanese government has urged the public to be more careful when wearing the plastic monstrosities.
Apparently, the brightly-colored safety hazards have been getting caught in the moving stairs. Fortunately, most people have been escaping unscathed, but one 5-year old girl broke her middle toe and had three of her toenails ripped off when she couldn't pull her foot out in time."

Please people... watch your kids when they are going up and down elevators while wearing these shoes.

Yikes!

I always thought those things were ugly and this is just another reason not to buy or wear them. Plus I am sure completely plastic shoes would just make my feet smell. :hurl:

I've read that some UK hospitals have banned them as the build up of static electricity affects monitoring equipment and therefore patient well being

It is not only crocs, but sandals that have caused problems. Also long pants and skirts/dresses. Loose shoe laces have gotten tangled in the stairs and people have been horribly injured and yes, you can even be killed on one. Everyone should know where the stop buttons are located and how to use them... and always pay attention when riding an escalator, especially when you have a small child with you.

Well, I can personally vouch for the escalator issue (or at least my 6 year old son can). While at WDW in June, my son had the end of his crocs "eaten" by the escalator near the exit to Soarin' at the land pavilion. We told the managers there as it seemed dangerous and had I not been there to pull him up out of his shoe when I saw it happen, I'm not sure what sort of injury may have occurred. Well, the managers said they were keeping track of how many times this occurs as it seems to be a real issue. Disney was nice enough to replace the shoes (even though we purchased them before we left from home). The feeling I got was that this is a real problem. I made sure my son picked his feet up on every other escalator we rode.

Wrong. They are made of an antibacterial microfiber that eliminates any odor. Since odor in plastic shoes comes from the bacteria/sweat and the microfiber eliminates the sweat/kills the bacteria that problem does not exist.

I'm gonna go a little further and just say: escalators are dangerous. You have all these pieces of clothing which are otherwise safe and then the common thread of escalators.

And Japan has more accidents because Japan has escalators everywhere - like even up hills in the sidewalk.

So be careful, but dont blame a shoe because you let your feet slide over the end of the escalators - doing that is very dangerous. You're supposed to step off.

Thank you!

I saw something on tv where a little boy was seriously injured because his pants leg got caught in an escalator.

Maybe if we were all nekked when we used escalators it would cut down on all of the accidents...:lookaroun

I, too, have always been against Crocs and view them as one of the most hideous creations by humankind (somewhere in the range of Six Flags and Rap music), and have always mocked the product accordingly. However, my wife purchased a pair and despite her past mockery of the product, she swears they are the most comfortable footwear she's ever owned. A full day at the park with my Nikes, I'm ready to remove my feet at the ankles, but she's still walking around in total comfort. Fashion Disaster vs. Comfort. I guess you have to weigh what is more important to you.

Crocs on children are one thing. Kids can get away with wearing hideous clothes, and really they ought to take full advantage of that while they can :). Crocs on adults are something else entirely. And I don't care how comfortable they are. I think an adult wearing crocs looks ridiculous.

How come I am picturing a certian Kevin Smith Film

Brodie: Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.

Thats kids on the Escalator again..

Crocs are not dangerous; it is the people wearing them who are not paying attention that are dangerous. Any sandal can get caught in an escalator if you're not paying attention. So can shoelaces. People need to quit fooling around on escalators and pay attention to what they're doing, and step off at the end, like you're supposed to. Maybe kids need to start having an "escalator education & safety" class in kindergarten, teaching them the proper way to use one, because parents seem to be incapable of doing so. For some reason, people and the media are just hellbent on doing whatever they can to make Crocs look bad. Why does anyone else care what I'm wearing on my feet? Moral of the story: don't be a dumbass and your shoes won't get caught in the escalator.

My sister just bought my daughter a pair of Mickey Crocs for Christmas (she actually found them on sale which is really rare. Not sure if the store is going to stop carrying them or not). She told me that I need to watch her when she wears them and we are on escalators. I thought it was strange but then realized they are no different than anything else we wear.

YES!! It's so true!!

Honestly, anything can be dangerous given enough stupidity, and we all know there's no shortage of that... :animwink:

Just as a general reply from someone who has some problems with their feet...i wore my crocs around Disney almost all week and my feet felt like i was walking on a cloud. Many running shoes even hurt my feet unfortunately so as much as even I think they're ugly, they obviously work. That's why many nurses here in Canada wear them daily!

Also, I'm agreeing with everyone else when they say that we need to be generally careful on escalators not only when we're wearing crocs. No one should be playing around on them...
