Best part of kids getting older

I hate the fact that my girls (now 13 and 11) are growing up, but thankfully they are too old for the kids menus. Both of them have always had advanced palettes, and hated being forced to eat off the kids menus when we were on the dining plan.

Could not agree with you more! Our son was thrilled when he turned 10 so he could eat whatever he pleased. He as well disliked having to eat off the kids menu during our trip before last. However at his 10th birthday he informed everyone he was now an adult because Disney said so. We all got a laugh and could tell we go far to often. If that is possible.

I'm just glad that Disney is so flexible with their meals and desserts. Our daughter is 13, but preferred a kid's meal a the Cali Grill. The waiter was wonderful, helped her create an "adult" meal, and she loved it. Personally, I love it that I can get a kid's make-your-own-sundae for dessert instead of an adult dessert!:p

My DS always liked to eat. I can remember him at 8 years old coloring at the table at the California Grill and saying to the waitress, "I'll have the filet medium please." She looked at me and I said "give him what he wants." When he got a little older I would give him money and say go get something to eat and enjoy a romatic dinner with mom.

We do greatly appreciate when Disney servers are understanding about the threshold between children and adults. We've had some great servers (when the kids were kids) that let them put together an adult entree (smaller steak, pasta, etc.), and we've also very much appreciated when servers let our 10 year old adults eat off of the kids menu when there was nothing on the adult menu they wanted.

However, there have also been a few "not so understanding" servers who have "a**-raped" us for $25 in chicken soup because the kids both ordered chicken soup (a bowl bigger than your fat head) and then expected them to eat full size entree. Our DS grazes and our DD is a stick who couldn't eat a full sized entree if she wanted to. And even my DW will only order an appetizer and a dessert for dinner.

People don't eat based on their age, there's no formula. People eat based on their metabolism, the weather, emotions, etc.

We did not buy the dining plan when they were little because my girls did not eat the kids crap junk either. We always had the nicest servers that would split up 1 adult meal for them onto 2 plates. We also did a lot of buffets. When I was young the kids meals where just smaller portions of normal food, not processed crap like it is now. It makes me sad to think of all those kids who are eating this stuff all the time like its normal for them to eat unhealthy crap. I have said it before and will say it again. For some reason Americans feed their kids the worst crap when the rest of the world feeds their kids normal healthy food. It's no wonder why this country has the highest child obesity and illness out of any other developed country. Its funny that we think of it as advanced palettes when all they are eating is normal every day food. Kids will eat what you give them. They are not born craving chicken nuggets. If you start out feeding them normal healthy food that is what they will like and eat. OK public service announcement over. :)

My issue was more servers being inflexible about making them order off the kid's menu, when the last think my kids wanted was pizza, burgers or chicken nuggets. I remember my eldest at 6 salivating over plank grilled salmon, which we had to order separate of the dining plan.

This issue exactly is why the dining plan did not work for us. We ended up paying for more meals out of pocket then being able to use the plan. Although the counter service plan works better since they do not separate out adult and child credits. And then just pay for the table service. Or stick to all buffet. I kind of feel for Disney on this, a few years ago they tried to "healthy up" the kids menu but too many parents complained. It really stink for those of us trying to raise food healthy kids.

This is a funny post. My youngest son has an advanced palette as well, but it was my oldest son who was your typical picky-American -fussy-eater-child. One time we went, when we only had one kid under 10, and the oldest child ate off the child's menu while the younger one picked off the adult menu. Even today at almost 20 years old, the older one is so picky and skinny as a rail.

You're just a few way too short years away from something even better. A nice dinner for adults only and the kiddos being old enough to eat someplace by themselves. I'm finally going to do that this summer. Enjoy them while they're still "littleish"
