Carnival sails out of Charleston SC to Bermuda that may be an alternative to NYC. As we live 25 miles from Charleston that is a bucket list cruise for us.

We also are very close to Charleston. Carnival is changing ships, the Sunshine will replace Ecstasy in mid-2019; we're booked for a fall cruise to Bermuda in '19.

I was able to tour the Sunshine a few months ago. If you want to see some pictures, let me know and I'll send you a link.

Thanks for the offer Chuck; no need for pictures (but a general impression would be welcome). Thanks
My expectations were very low, but I was fairly impressed. It's only 5 years old, so it was in very good condition. I liked most of the public spaces, and I really liked the upper sun deck for adults.

We were not allowed into any staterooms, unfortunately, so I can't give you any info on size, bathrooms, etc.

The did give us lunch and my steak was excellent. But I hate when the waiters get up on the server's stations and dance, which I guess is a regular occurrence.

Celebrity does Bermuda out of Port Elizabeth NJ (much easier to get into and park than the NYC cruise port) and Norwegian does Bermuda out of NYC. In fact the Celebrity and Norwegian ships have the same itinerary. Same sea days, same port days.

I have done the Celebrity out of NJ to Bermuda twice now, and am itching to go again. Cruising to Bermuda is a great way to go. the food and lodging on the island is quite expensive, and by sailing in on your own hotel and restaurant, it makes it much more affordable. I assume Disney does the same as Celebrity and Norwegian and docks for 3 days in Kings Wharf.

If you are taking a cruise out of NYC - such as Disney, then in my opinion, it makes no difference if you fly into JFK, Newark, or LaGuardia. LaGuardia does have some delays, but then you should not be flying in the day of your cruise departure anyway.

Normally, getting into NYC can be a toss up, and during rush hour you will hit some delays, but barring a major accident, it is bearable. However, they are now beginning work on the helix , and this work will go on and on and on and on.

For those who are not familiar with the helix, it is the name for the corkscrew portion of 495 that goes into the Lincoln Tunnel on the NJ side. The Lincoln tunnel is what comes out right by the NYC cruise terminal. So you either have to go north to the GWB or south to the Holland Tunnel. Both of which are going to be backed up because everyone else is going to have the same idea.

So, I highly suggest getting in the day before, and paying for a hotel in NYC. Or, if you know what you are doing, and the weather is decent (I.e. NOT winter) and you have a reasonable amount of luggage, you could stay in NJ, take a cab to the NY Waterway ferry, and then take the ferry across to the midtown terminal. It's like a 5 minute walk to the Cruise Terminal from there. I would not want to try and go by car into Manhattan while under a time constraint. If I myself were cruising out of NY, I would arrange for an EARLY car service to Manhattan, Like 5 AM early. In what I call normal traffic, I can get from my house to the NYC Cruise Terminal in about 30 - 40 minutes. With this planned construction, I see RT 3, RT 80, and RT 495 backing up for miles.

If you are cruising out of Port Elizabeth in NJ, the by all means, fly into EWR of you can. Come in the day before, and stay in the Marriot right at the airport. Most of the cruise lines out of Port Elizabeth run a shuttle from that hotel to the port. Of course that means you get to spend the night at lovely Newark Airport, just slightly more appealing than spending the night in an industrial park. But you do have that cruise to look forward to, and you can look out your window and see the giant flashing eagle sign on top of the A-B brewery.

We'll most likely fly into JFK or LaGuardia, spend the night at a hotel near the airport, then uber/shuttle to the port. Any recommendations fro getting from airport area hotel to port?
