Bathroom Issues!

I'm taking my newly potty trained 3 year old to WDW 12/4 to 12/12 and she is great with her new skills except for one thing - toilets that flush automatically TERRIFY her when she's in the middle of her business and she ends up not wanting to use the potty! PLEASE tell me WDW bathrooms don't have this feature or else I'm gonna have to come up with some sort of contingency plan!

And if they do, does anyone have any contigency plan ideas?

Bring post it notes with you (just the little ones) and place them over the electric eye. Take them off when your child is far enough away from the toliet not to scare him or her.

I had one of those go off at a mall when DD was newly potty trained and it set her back a week or so. It was a tiny potty just her size. She thought it was so great until it flushed when she was still sitting on it.

Welcome to WDWmagic!

I would follow DisneyPhD's advise, thats a good one! With the way some of those toilets act...I might use that myself
There are toilets with regular flush, but I very much doubt that there is any listing of them...maybe try guest services...

That is awesome advise that I need to remember. That is such a good idea.

I was going to just mention that I know in MK the Columbia Harbor House bathrooms are not up to date yet.

But your idea solves everything. Thanks for the tip!

I would like to take credit for originality, but I must admit I got the idea from reading on line! I tell you these message boards can be very helpful!

You can take credit for passing along the good advise though. It is one of the best small but great to know type of advise I have heard. By saying small I don't mean to downplay it because it is a great one. To have a child who you are trying to get into the swing of things get set back really, really stinks (no pun intended :) ).

Thanks mrtoad. As far as potty training set backs, the flushing toliet wasn't as bad as the time she fell in! She was so proud of herself, she had finally had success and stood up to show hubby and I. When she was standing hubby took the little potty seat of the big toliet, she sat back down fell right in! Thank goodness it had been flushed and I just cleaned it that day, but that really set things back. Her pride was so hurt. To make matters worse we had some friends over and she could hear them laughing in the other room. They swoar up and down it wasn't at her, but she was really upset. (3 years old is a very senstive age.) I was about to kill my friends. :brick:

I am happy to say she now has it down cold and is doing great. Having a baby sister hasn't even set her back and now a days (but we have other issues, just not potty ones!)

The trick also will work if you cover it with your hand, just don't move or it will go off. The post it notes are safer in my opinion.

Yeah the falling in would be bad. My daughter is 3 1/2 and she does not use a little seat on top of the toilet anymore as she could not get her self up on it. So she just holds on. The issues we have is if she goes in and does not tell us and does #2, well let's just say she needs some paper skills...

The things we read on these boards... lol I love it! ;)

My nephew is potty trained too, he knows he has to flush and never forgets to do it. I haven´t checked if he is afraid of the automatic ones though, but I know he is very amused with those who have the '2000 flushes' tablets in the tank that make the water blue, so when he does his business there, it turns green! lol ...and he has great aim, since the challenge when he goes, is aiming to the center or he loses... hehehe - works like a charm! ;)

That should be a rule for adults too, if they miss they lose and have to pay some sort of fine. Nothing like walking into a public bathroom and it looks like someone was blind who was just in there. Makes me :hurl:

All kids go thru that...thats where those flushable wipes come in handy...kids like them because they're "special, nust for them".

I hated potty training time. My youngest is 9 & still hates to use those self flushers...always getting a bath. *sigh*

Or you can just use your hand to cover the auto flush, being a maintenance person the auto flushes are great most people never flush (never) then the next person comes in and goes and thinks its broke and wont flush eather you can imagine the mess. One other thing dont use those flushable wipes they do not break down that good in the pipes and plug up all the time along with people flushing there own diapers (yes people do flush adult diapers)seems everyone must wear them?We even offer trashcans in the stalls for them with a sign but they still flush themknow you know why Roto rooter is a fast growing company.Sorry about complaining but this is a serious problem that cost companys thousands of dollars every year.

I held off potty training last year until AFTER our DisneyWorld trip. We went down in April with our older daughter's band for Magic Music Days, and I was worried that crowds might be such that there wouldn't always be a potty at the exact moment she needed to go ! In those training days there isn't much "hold it" control !

I've never heard of the post-it notes, but what a great idea ! My little one figured out her own alternitive to dealing with the self-flushers. It took me a little while to figure out what she was telling me, but this is what she came up with. For some reason she believes the sound the automatic thing makes right before the flush begins sounds like MEOW. Therefore, she says there is a kitty who has to flush every potty when someone is done. He meows to let you know to stand back because he's going to flush now ! Sometimes the way her mind works scares me...................

We did too, I figured it would easier just to change dipars then drop everything and run to the potty. However you can't put it off forever!! There was times I thought little PhD would never get potty trained, then one day I took the pull ups away for ever (morning and night.) 2 accidents and then that was it, she was potty trained and when she had it, she had it. No more problems, even a night. Turns out she is just lazy and why rush to the potty when you have a pull up on?

The kitty story is too cute!

Mr toad, the wiping problems are a part of life (and parenthood.) We have to be careful or she will use too many of the wet wipes and we don't want problems so we have to limit her to one each time.

I remember people telling me 10 years or so ago that they took their kids to WDW and the thing the kids liked and were impressed with the most were the self flushing potties!

We had the same problem. Just too lazy to make the trip to the potty. A WDW trip was coming up & my MIL sent a postcard with Mickey & Minnie on it. She wrote "we heard you are coming to visit & we are very happy, but we don't sell diapers here so start using that potty!" Worked like a charm...from that moment on never an accident.

a cool story that goes along with this thread. my girlfriend was a cm at DAK and one time a mother came into her store frantic because her daughter was scared to go to the bathroom because monsters flushed the toilet. Well my girl friend's boss at the time had som promotional stickers with animals on them. he asked her what the scaries animal was she said a lion, i agreed with her, anyway he gave her a munch of lion stickers and told here if she puts the sitcher over the light on the toi-dee it would scare the monster away. totally worked.

That is also a great idea! Just like the post it notes, just remember to take them off. No one wants and unflushed toliet around as walts son 1971 knows all too well! :hammer:

We held on our last trip as well. My daughter had just turned 3 about 2 months prior and we were trying for a few weeks prior to the trip with not much success so we put it off until we got back. About a week or so after returning we spent a whole weekend working on it. We just took of the pullups and put the potty in the room she would be hanging out in and just went for it. At night the same thing. Within a few days she was trained. Though she has wet her bed a handful of times which is frustrating but it can happen. It has been quite a while since she has had one, luckily...

Last year we had our newly potty trained three year old and we took pull ups just in case knowing there could be a set back, but she did great except for the auto-flushing. She would hold it until we got back to the hotel room and we were amazed. She now won't go in any bathroom that even remotely smells funny or looks unclean, but she continues to hold herself other wise. I think it is bad but there is no reasoning with a toddler on it. But she is finally getting over her fear of the auto-flush. I will remember the post-it-notes for the next DD. Still about a year away on potty training her though.
