Re: Memories
What I remember was that Mattel became a sponsor. At the Marketplace, they redid "Toys Fantastic" which is now part of "Team Mickey", I think, and made it a Mattel toy store. At Epcot, Barbie appeared onstage at America Gardens in some kind of a "Barbie Around the World" thing.. The initial show was substantially revamped after a month or so, then ran for maybe six months. When not appearing at America Gardens, Barbie would ride up in a pink stretch limo... which previously had been jet black as Mickey's 60th birthday limo... between Mexico and the World Showcase Towers (gift shops)... to do meet 'n greet.
This was definately one of the stranger chapters in Epcot history. Along with it, the Circus Spectacular, where a stunt motorcyclist roared up a guy wire towards Spaceship Earth, and elephants tromped across the Communicore fountain.
Then there was "Skylidescope", with daytime fireworks and hang-gliders across World Showcase lagoon. A later show... around the 20th anniversary.. reprised some of this and added huge inflatable characters at a half dozen locations around the lagoon.
Or the huge birthday cake that filled the fountain just as you entered Epcot in 1986 (WDW's 15th birthday). As you entered the park, you were given a prize drawing ticket. Every day, a GM car was awarded.
Or the initial parade that circled World Showcase, back in 1984 or so. 8-foot doll-like characters representing various nations.
Also sometime in the early 90's, there was "Splashtacular" at the newly-refurbished Communicore fountain. With a storyline very similar to Fantasmic, Mickey Mouse battled villians in various forms... in the grand finale, an audioanimatronic dino-robot creature rose from the Communicore West shrubbery, flashing and sparking and smoking only to be defeated by MM magic.
Later, a second-generation dino-robot appeared as an "Elvisasaurus" in Galaxy Quest, a Tomorrowland Theater (Magic Kingdom) show.
