The Country Bears Bombs at the U.S. Box Office

The verdict is in, and it's payback time for Disney: the studio's latest attempt at cashing quick bucks on a tested formula brought it a very low $1,701,000 across 2,553
theaters on opening day. The Bears are on pace for a $5.3 million three-day weekend, which won't be enough to get them in the top 5. Nothing to sing about!

They had to expect it to bomb. I honestly, thought it would be a lot worse. I wouldn't pay $9.50 to go see it, and I'm a Disneygeek and a CBJ fan. Ugh

Well... I hope now that Disney will get the point.

They wont put HM and POTC into turnaround though, they will still be made.

I think that Disney will figure this was just a bad story (not the ride-to-movie factor) and hope HM and POTC do better. If they don't, they will get the hint and stop. But if they do well....

Ride-to-movie

Actually, the idea of taking a "ride" that has a story and putting it to another art form (movie) is not exactly a bad idea. The question is whether the story makes a good movie, and also whether or not they actually use the ride's story.

It is obvious that the writers of "Country Bears" knew or cared very little about the original's story or its real country-music base. They seemed more interested in Bonnie Raitt and the rock-"Almost Famous" crowd. (A fine movie in itself, by the way, but completely different from the CBJ.)

I am a fan of old-time, traditional country music and a sort-of historian on Nashville/Bluegrass/Appalachian/Western music genres, and the truth is that the original CBJ writers obviously knew their subject matter. The songs are either real songs or take-offs on popular country standards that fit well in the concept. The rock-tinted "Country Bears" here seem just completely out of place.

And this says nothing about the storyline of a bear rasied as human!?!?

As for the HM and POTC movies coming... I just hope they got good writers. Pop culture icons can make great movies, but only if they completely take the story seriously, or maybe even if they have a little fun (ergo, "The Brady Bunch" movie) -- but in that case the writing has to be even sharper! Either way, be careful!

HM and PoTC will do better because of the people invovled...you've got eddy murphy on HM...which even tho he hasnt had a major hit in a while..he also hasnt had a huge failure either (Pluto Nash isnt released yet..so we shall see)...

You got Bruckheimer (sp?) on PoTC......you KNOW thats not gunna be bad...

I'm pretty sure I heard that this was either the first script the guy for the Bears had done or the first movie for the director.

HM and POTC, as if Bears wasn't bad enough, are less Attraction and more Stars. I've been told that Bears was the "most loyal" film of the three...ugh!
