Back pain and Rides?

Hey all,

Of course, since I'm going to Disney in 2 weeks, I threw my back out.

I've had a bulging disc for years and cope with it pretty well.
this is the first time I really blew it out before going to disney-Severe lower back pain and sciatic nerve pain as well.

What rides, in your opinions would probably be best skipped during this trip? I already know if Mission:space is open i'm not doing it, along with RNRollercoaster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pumbas Nakasak

Heading for the great escape.
My dad suffers from back and balance problems, he sat out the following

Space Mountain
Star Tours
Body Wars
Tower
RnRC
River Rapids

But managed
Dinosaur (which amazed me)
Test Track
Splash Mountain
Kilimonjaro Safari

I had a pretty bad car accident once before a WDW trip, and I couldn't go on anything that knocked my head and neck around. Different than your back, I know, but similar rides are involved. I skipped:
Space Mountain
Splash Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain RR
Body Wars
Test Track
Star Tours
ToT
RnRC
Dinosaur
It was still a fun trip. Make the most of what you can go on. Have fun!

Well if you are planning to go to Universal I recommend not riding Back to the future... It is the worst on your back and neck and ribs.
As for Disney rides, thunder mountain is pretty jerky. I would probably refrain from that one too

man!

I can't imagine not riding space mountain! what am i gonna do???
Guess i'll just have to ride the haunted mansion like 50 times!!

Oh, I left out this pretty important health fact as well-I had brain surgery in March. One of the reaseons my back flared up was from the 8 hour surgery. My surgeon said I'm fine to go on rides after 3 months-it'll be 4 months when i go 2 weeks from today.

How is disney with helping people out like me? I won't want a cart or anything, but do they help with lines if it gets to be too much? I'm a bit worried about overheating.

thanks all,

I would recommend you avoid Primevil Whirl also.

I didn't have a backache when I went on this ride but I had one when I got off.

I can only imagine how bad it would be if I tried to ride it WITH an excisting backache.

I would say anything that usually throws you around...as everyone has mentioned. You should know from previous trips which rides that you like do this. If you aren't sure , skip it this trip. Make sure you have a heating pad and your pain meds with you.

Just an aside....about 8 years ago my brother had brain surgery also. He ended up with disc problems and pinched nerves from the way his head was restrained. He ended up having cervical spinal fusion. Please take care of this now...don't let it get out of hand.

Enjoy your trip. You may not hit all of your fav rides, but you will be in Disney. Take time to rest and stay hydrated.

Wow. That's terrible news. Hope everything worked out. I'm seeing an orthopedic surgeon on Monday (hopefully just to get meds and physical therapy scrips) I can't even fathom going uder the knife again!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I know which rides I can handle, I've been a ton of times. Like i knowI can do SM once or twice during the week, just not 12 times in a row. I'm just curious if there are any rides with a reputation for being back breakers? that primevil whirl thing sure looks the part!

Spaceship Earth here I come!!!!

If your getting meds, it will help. I have 2 blown lumbar disks (both sides) and the meds helped out. I was on Vioxx(anti inflammatory), Flexerill (muscle relaxant), and Percocet (pain killer). You'll feel zero pain on this stuff. I've weened myself off of the drugs and now I just pack them in my toiletry bag just in case. On second thought, WDW would probably be awesome on that combo. You wouldn't care how long the lines are, how bad the fast food is, how much the water costs, and how many rides were down for rehab. You would be chillin', but It's a Small World would freek you out like Lisa Simpson did at Duff Gardens.

I certainly know the feeling about missing rides. Due to my disability I can't ride all the fun thrill rides like RNR or Test Track. Even the tame rides such as POTC are nearly impossible to ride because I have to get outta my chair and can't hold my self up due to severe scholiosis. But like everyone has said here, at Disney it doesn't matter because your still just glad to be there. To tell you the truth I could have cared less about the rides...I was having a ball at the Boardwalk going to Jellyrolls!!! :sohappy:

Duff beer for me, Duff beer for you. I'll have a Duff, you have one too.

I usually try to avoid anything "bumpy" though as you know, there are good days and bad days. If I'm feeling relatively pain-free I will attempt one or two thrill rides but be careful not to get over-confidant or you can pretty much forget enjoying yourself the rest of your stay. Bring a few travel ice packs (the kind you crack and shake) just in case you need to do the ice-and-heat thing and if you start to feel the pain coming on, head back to the room to pop a few pills and lie down for a bit.

Luckily there are plenty of gentle rides at Disney that are just as fun as the wilder ones :) Take it easy and have a great trip!

I have a bad back to and I would not go on some rides
like Dinosaur Test Track Splash Mountain and Space Mountain
other then that the rides are ok for me.

We're just back from WDW and my wife really pulled her back juts before we went there. Lower back, sharp pains....

She only sat out Star Tours and Dinosaur...

She did....

Space Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain
Body Wars
Test Track
Kilamanjaro Safari
and
Mission: Space

None of these rides seemed to make things much worse..I only remember her complaining slightly after BTMRR....
