Baby formula TSA

We've flown several times with infants. They have always allowed us to bring the 2 ounce pre-mixed formulas. But for older kids we just bring bottles and dry mix and then try to track down a room-temperature bottle of water.

I had no problem bringing plenty of the dry mix through. Also I brought empty clean bottles, and brought small unopened bottles of water and had no problem when they saw it was for a baby.

tip if you don't want to wash bottles: I had 4 oz bottles and used 8oz playtex disposable liners in them(the drop in kind) I brought one clean bottle(of a different kind so I wouldn't confuse them) for measuring water in. I put a liner in the bottle, pour water in, then formula, then if you take the top and fold it down you can easily screw the top on while holding the liner so it wouldn't move. Brought bottles to the park with water already in them too, Never washed bottles the entire trip, just the tops.

We used the Playtex drop-ins as well. We prefilled them with the proper amount of powder and then just added water from a water bottle, which we brought as well. Every TSA and Customs agent we have dealt with is always very accommodating when they you ypu have a baby. They sometimes check the powder to ensure it is formula, but for the most part, you can bring as many liquids as you want if you want. At least that has been our experience.

We are travelling with our 6 month old in January. I just wanted to clarify, is it OK to bring 2 8oz bottles of mixed formula through the TSA checkpoint? Thanks for all your help!

It should be fine - go to the link above, and print it out. IMO, 2 8oz bottles are not unreasonable - but I'm not a TSA agent, but they have usually responded well to reprints from their site.

TSA varies with these things. It's been several years since I've flown with an infant, but I used to take at least 2 prepared bottles and 2-4 bottles with just dry formula measured out in them that would be ready to go as soon as I added water...never had a problem. I had similar success with sippy cups. We did have one case when DD7 was a baby where I had to travel with special formula for her tummy. It was non-prescription and TSA initially told me the 4 large Enfamil containers were way too much, but I begged and pleaded- explained my situation- and they OK'd it. Still, I wouldn't count on this.

I would definitely call your outbound airport and get the name of the person you speak with as well as getting their policy on baby formula since it seems to vary, even if only slightly, from one airport to another. I spoke with a TSA agent in uniform about this issue as we travelled on the monorail at Orlando. He stated that dry formula is okay as long as they can "test" it. He also stated liquid is not okay. He was young and probably never has any personal experience with feeding a hungry youngster while in transit.

You can bring as many medically necessary or baby liquids as you want. Water bottles are okay as long as you mention they are for the baby to mix formula. They cannot ask questions legally.

we have not only brought 4 bottles or more, you never know when your flight will be delayed, but all the juice in sippie cups that your kid may want. and yes, you can carry on lots of water if it is for mixing with formula.

i have no problem with this, i think you need to be able to bring stuff for the kids.........but, how stupid are we as a country, thinking this whole thing actually protects us.

do we really think terrorist don't read the tsa rules and know they can get liquids through if they claim it is water for formula, or juice for kids? end of rant, just tired of being inconvenienced for a system with so many holes in it.

While I agree that there are some policies that really don't help, there are many in place that will and do make a difference.

Ditto. I traveled multiple times with 50+ oz of breast milk and no kid(work trips and vacation).

Replying to myself to let you know that a print-out from the website saved me some money recently. A TSA agent was going to confiscate the CO2 cylinder from my auto-inflate life jacket - until I handed her the print-out and asked to speak to a supervisor. Problem solved.

So again, if it is important and/or expensive, have the print-out!
