Avoiding sickness on vacation

Nothing is worse than planning for a trip to the World and then getting sick. During my last trip, my son, who was 4 at the time, came down with a cold on day 3 of a 6 day trip. Kind of a bummer, but not enough to keep him out of the parks. We just slept later and left earlier.

I was just reading a trip report from a family that actually had to leave after the first night because their son got so sick. Very sad, though it sounds like they really enjoyed the first day.

Anyway, it got me wondering: Anyone take any preventative measures to avoid illness, either during or in anticipation of an trip?

If I had my way, I'd pull my kids out of school a month before my trip, wrap them in bubble wrap and feed them Vitamin C intravenously until the day we leave. Thankfully, my wife is more level headed than me.

Still, I'm curious whether anyone does anything different before a big trip or during a trip.

Something else to think about with regards to disinfecting everything in your immediate vicinity – I have read in more than one place that it seems kids are these days more prone to suffering from bugs because of the sterile home environment they are being brought up in. It seems that we need exposure to these bugs for our body’s immune system to get to grips in dealing with them. So it can be argued that bringing up someone in a totally sterile environment may not be the best way forward.

You are absolutely correct. Improved sanitation after WWII was the primary cause of the polio outbreak in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

Bottled water. Bottled Water. And Bottled Water.

Orlando water will wreck havoc on your digestive system if youre not careful.

Just be healthy, plenty of orange juice, eat right, the normal stuff.

Just read a report that our tendency to give Tylenol, etc to young kids for a fever is actually supressing their natural immune system. Our pediatrician always wanted us to give meds for a fever of 101 or over. (100 for small infants). However I would still take anti bacterial gel for use in the parks. Otherwise always use soap & hot water...its still the best way to prevent the spread of germs.

Soap and hot water is the way to go for sure! Believe it or not, many germs are helpful, and the skin has its own abilities to protect the body from the bad ones. Antibacterial soaps and gels indiscriminately kill all germs and disrupt the delicate balance of micro-flora that is necessary for healthy skin.

There is a place for antibacterial soaps--they are useful in a home situation, for a short duration, when a family member is ill. But in most cases, they are unnecessary. So ironically, antibacterial soaps usually do more harm than good. They ultimately promote antibiotic-resistant strains of germs. In addition, as the antibacterial soaps are auto-inoculated into the eyes and nose, their chemicals cause stress on the immune system.

You may not believe this, but I like getting into hot water!

I've drank Water at all four theme parks from various sources..ie drinking fountains, tap water, even a hose once when I was really thirsty at Animal Kingdom.

I have been to Orlando 11 times in 10 years and have NEVER gotten sick from the water.

Don't waste your money on bottled water unless you just don't like the TASTE of the Orlando water...it might be nasty tasting to some, but It's not full of germs...I imagine Disney keeps a REALLY close eye on that.

I think alot of people don't like the flavor just because it's not as COLD as they would like it. The best water on Property IMO is the water in the drinking fountain at the bottom at the staircase in the Polynesian Resort Lobby...It's ICE COLD and very good!:slurp:
