Avoiding ABC Commissary at Hollywood

Writing this in the POFQ hotel as a quick note to advise those who may be visiting the Hollywood Studios park.

We were eating in the ABC commissary today, wrapping up our desserts. The food was good, but I soon felt sick after my son drew my attention to a HUGE ROACH munching on a crumb of his hamburger bun that had fallen under the table as we were eating.

I could not believe that kind of thing happening at a place like WDW, where they are supposedly meticulous about cleaning, etc. I took a video of the roach in the resteraunt. My son moved the table for better lighting and the horrible thing just kept eating and didn't bother to scurry away. It was longer than 2 inches...just huge to me, but I'm not from Florida, so I'm not sure what the standard size of roach is.

I alerted a cast member/resteraunt worker who was standing int he room and told her she should probably take care of it. We simply left with nasty feelings in our stomachs.

The rest of the day we called the ABC comissary the 'roach coach'. Not going back there EVER! Beware! :hurl::hurl::hurl::hurl::hurl:

What you probably encountered was a Palmetto bug, Florida's version of the cockroach.

They are everywhere in Florida.
The Florida heat and humity make for perfect living conditions for these creatures.
I'm not surprised that one was spotted at The ABC Commissary because of the constant opening and closeing of the doors all day long. I would imagine most of the counter service places fight a constant battle to keep these bugs out.

My wife and I eat at The ABC Commissary at Disney's Hollywood Studios every trip, and we have never spotted any bugs there other than ocassional pesky fly, which I consider to be much worse than a roach.

I always order the Fish and chips meals, both of which are deep fried which would kill any germs/contaminates that may be around.

My wife and I both like the convience and the food at The ABC Commissary and won't let one alleged bug spotting keep us away or ruin our vacation.

The ABC Commissary is notorious for being downright nasty. Most Disney-goers won't eat there for it's nasty, nasty food. :hurl:

I - and many people - just don't eat quick service at the Studios. The choices are poor and the food is sub par to the quality in the other three parks. (By a lot.)

I doubt it was an infestation in the restaurant. It more than likely walked through the door as someone came in to the restaurant - not much you can do about that!
Disney have enough pest control that most things are dead very quickly. It's VERY rare you see any bug inside a Disney building. They even do a great job of controlling them outdoors.

Id be more bothered about the kitchen workers who dont wash their hands after they use the toilet.

That is very very true.
Getting hepatitis should be a larger concern than the bug.

A friend of mine has lived in Orlando her whole life and we were talking about roaches and stuff one time when I was down there and she said: "If your in Florida, roaches and VERY large bugs are just a way of life, we don't have screens over our pools and screens on the front of our cars for nothing ya know......"

Last year while I was talking to a POP manager we saw a giant Palmetto bug on the lobby floor in front of us. He crushed it with his shoe and kept on talking.

I read in the paper that they were importing some sort of weird South American fly to eat all the fire ants in FL.

I wonder what we could import to take care of the Palmetto bugs - or Godzilla bugs as they are known at my house!:animwink:

"So a Palmetto bug walks into a restaurant..."

:lol::lol::lol:

I can understand some people being upset at the sight of bugs, and that is ok, to each their own.

I agree with other posters that Florida is notorious for bugs, especially the mammoth palmetto bug. I live here, was raised here all my life, and even though I have a clean house, I also have bugs. Such is life.

I have to agree with other posters that the ABC Commisary has TERRIBLE food. Even if there wasn't the traumatic bug sighting, the food is horrible. I walk past the Commisary every time we go to DHS and I look in at everyone eating and wonder how they are able to stomach it. I ate there in 2005 and YUCKO - never saw bugs, though.

i had to eat at ABC while we were at the Studios during my trip earlier this month. At that perticular time the food wasnt that bad, though I may have been on a good day.

Talking of roaches or Palmetto bugs, I had one land on my leg as I was walking through DTD and try to run up the leg of my shorts!!
