Avengers Expected to Take in $175 Million on Opening Weekend...

Who said that? I can't imagine anyone thinking this movie wasn't gong to be a huge success.

Then again, you have to put things into perspective. Today's ticket prices, 3D, IMAX. As someone who has studied box office forecasting and revenues for many years, The Avengers opening is very impressive. However, trust me when I say, there are several movies (some that are maligned on this board) that have sold many more tickets opening weekend.

Gone with the wind, given the inflation rates, is the highest grossing film of all time. I think I read that on Box Office Mojo or something.

In the eyes of anyone that knows, yes. And most importantly, to Disney, yes. I still refuse to give Disney any credit for The Avengers though. Had Disney never bought Marvel, this movie would have made just as much money.

Amen. And I blame Disney for not promoting John Carter more. They could have had a bigger success than they did if they just put more effort into it.

I'm really happy for Disney (it really needed this after the blah Muppets and disastrous Carter), but I hope this won't increase the chances of seeing Marvel heroes anywhere in the parks.... :P

I'm honestly torn about it. Obviously, any good news for Disney makes me happy. But I don't know. I found their whole purchase of Marvel smart, but shrewd. It was almost as if they were saying "We know we can't produce or promote a quality box office hit, so we'll just hire someone else to do it."
