Honestly, does anybody care about these films? Avatar is the one film I can think of that had a totally disproportionate impact on culture compared to its financial impact. I can't think of a single thing about that film that's remembered by audiences today or that has entered into the cultural memory.

Correct, it is amazing how little of a pop culture footprint it left, for how dominant a box office it had. What is remembered?
"Avatar, isn't that the movie with those blue guys?"
I don't think many people really care that much. But if reviews are decent, there will be enough curiosity people will go see it. Mega super hit? That would surprise me. But hey, the movie could be awesome.

I think the most startling thing about it was how well it did overseas. It's domestic box office only accounted for 27% of it's worldwide $2.8 billion total. That's in contrast with a movie like The Force Awakens, where 45% of its box office came from the US.

I care, and more importantly, I feel Cameron has earned some trust.

Really? Why?
I saw the movie twice in the theater and really enjoyed it. I've seen the extended version several times at home and will often pop it in and watch parts of it.
Terminator 1+2, Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic. I'll happily sit down and watch any of those, any time. Cameron has mastered the smart, emotionally satisfying blockbuster. Great characters, great world building, spectacular action, cutting edge effects, all wrapped around with a nice moral center. If Cameron has spent a full decade developing something, I definitely want to see it.
The man raised the bar so high, even South Park couldn't make fun of him:
