One of the most anticipated IP's Disney acquired in the Fox deal was the Avatar sequels which was recently delayed from Xmas 2020 to Xmas 2021. It looks like with the mouse now overseeing production it looks like things are finally on track for Avatar 2 to actually release in 2021.Personally I think Fox gave Cameron a bit too much freedom and should have put their foot down on a firm release date, Avatar 2 is a film that should have been released 4-5 years ago. Never the less here we are hopefully we're in the homestretch of finally seeing these films released.

I wonder what the production cost on this. I think if Disney markets the hell out of them and they cross $1 billion a piece, they’ll be happy.

These aren’t going to be marketed under Fox now are they?

I just have a bad feeling about this sequel. I don't think it will flop, but I don't see it coming close to the numbers the first one made.

This may be based on my feelings about the first film though. I liked it enough to see it twice in the theater when it came out, but I can't sit through it now. I have tried as recently as last week. Although I have watched 2 James Cameron movies (True Lies and T2) this week. At this point. I think I'd rather see a True Lies sequel.

I hope it does well, but something about it just feels really off.

Not to split hairs...but wasn’t Fox just the distributor?

I think Lightstorm owns the movie...just as Lucas owned empire strikes back and return of the Jedi from their release until he sold it to the mouse house that doesn’t get Star Wars?

Yes, Lightstorm owns Avatar.

I just want to point out the that Lightstorm has made 2 films since 2009. Alita and Terminator: Dark Fate. Both lost money.

And neither of those films were directed by Cameron. I think Avatar 2 will be a HUGE success and this comes from someone who disliked the first film.

Quite possible...though it is possible for sequels to be a “huge success” and yet come
Off as a failure....AHEM....

I think my point is that this thread immediately tuned to DAK...which means it’s on the path to the place where people spend 5-10 years spitballing “rumor: what’s coming to Pandora?!?”

...when the fact is they don’t own it...so the answer is likely: “nothing”

But Cameron seems a better sport than cranky old George Was all these years

I know they weren't directed by Cameron. I brought it up to point out that Lightstorm has had very little product over the past decade and what they have had lost money (Terminator: Dark Fate lost over $100 million). That could seriously impact the financial resources they have to throw at Avatar 2. If Avatar 2 comes out looking like an open world video game (like FoP) they will be in trouble.

True lies is such an underrated movie...

It’s perhaps the best “action comedy” ever...just as good as a Beverly Hills cop or lethal weapon...and without the R rating that makes it simple fun

I think it has a good chance of being successful. I'm not sure huge would be the word I'd use to describe its success though. I said a long time ago that the first sequel is the key. It has been so long since the first, you will have a curiosity as to what this will be I think. So unless it's a total poop show, it should do well enough. It's the 3rd movie and beyond that could be the problem. I think a lot rides on this 2nd movie. If it's a better movie than the first, I think it does fine and 3 and 4 as well.

Yep...

You also can’t pooch the “middle chapter(s)” 🤪
