Aunt Polly's gets permit for mechanical work...

That is exactly what it is. They're putting in a window air conditioner in the side of Aunt Polly's to keep a wireless access point cool. Those WAPs get pretty hot when a lot of people start using the wifi, and with Aunt Polly's being a 40 year old wood building, you can't risk catching the old wood on fire.

I'm not up on this Next-Gen stuff, but for there to be a WAPs on TSI . . . wouldn't that mean that they'd have to put in some underwater internet cables under the river heading over to TSI? Given the river boat, I'd assume they'd drain the river for this, in order to properly attach the cables, though I guess guys in wetsuits could attach them with something that "dries" underwater. Or maybe there is conduit heading over to the island they can use??

Since when does it require a permit to put in a window AC unit? If the permit was for HVAC, a whole different ball game than putting in a simple window unit, then they possibly pulled the wrong permit.

Aunt Polly's had HVAC, not sure if it is permissible by code to go back and try to use a smaller window unit to keep the place temperature controlled, would make a lot more sense to do some duct work and replace whatever other equipment needs replacing. I would also guess that somebody makes weatherized exterior WAPs for commercial applications which don't require a cooling unit.

Oh, uh, . . . yeah. Got it now by reading the thread a second time. Now I'm back to being "all excited" about Aunt Polly's coming back.

I think its ironic that AP had a theme of "hospitality" and warmth, and it has been left to rot for years, in front of guests who have nice memories of the place.

Heh. Sorry for the confusion Pixiedustmaker. Dry wit is hard to interpolate on the web.

But to answer your question, ignoring the specific reason, there is already power and telecom running to the island. It's not really an island. It, and the river, are still on top of the utilidor level. All the utilities running to TSI are in the tunnels, and in utility sleeves installed under the river (which isn't very deep and is just poured-in-place concrete).

I'd love to think they're doing this to bring it back, but given that they're not doing any electrical or cosmetic upgrades, it seems as if they're simply making it a more comfortable place to take a break. I hope I'm wrong.

Not to be a downer but if Disney is fixing aunt Polly's A/C for a bigger CM break room as hinted then that makes me assume two things. First, this restaurant will probably not open to the guests anytime soon. Secondly, does this also mean any rumor of getting anything new in TSI has just fizzled again because work being put into existing buildings tells me the area will remain unchanged indefinitely?

I thought the utilidors stopped at the edge of the RoA. Is there really a way to access the Island from the utilidors?

I didn't necessarily mean the tunnels themselves went under the river. Just that all the utilities for TSI travel underground from the tunnels, through banks of conduit.

The utilidors do not go under ROA, however I am almost 100% certain that it is still (just barely) above the utilidor "level" which is why the backstage lock is there.

The lock is there so they can drain ROA for maintenance...since it ties directly into Seven Seas Lagoon via the canal west of the MK (where the Electrical Water Pageant parks).

I cannot attest to the elevation of the ROA basin vs. the tunnels. The only point I was making was that if they needed to add a "hot spot" to TSI, they wouldn't have to string a cable through the river. There are plenty of conduits for that sort of thing. Besides, there's probably already a multi-strand fiber cable out there anyway, since Aunt Polly's had a POS system tied to the retail servers. Probably time clocks in the break rooms as well.

There shouldn't be any time clocks out there, at least I would think. The only ones that use and have used it (the break room and Island) other than maintenance are all on CDS, and TSI is a rotation spot, so they aren't and weren't there all the time. It probably is trivial to run the proper cabling to the island via already existing conduit. I am pretty sure ROA is at least slightly above the utilidor level, otherwise they wouldn't need the lock for the ship or for drainage purposes, and you can tell the elevation differences from Floridian Way.

Argh. Completely forgot about the locks and that ROA is elevated from 7SL. My bad.

And I was just guessing about the time clock out on the island. Knowing it had a break room, I just assumed they'd have a time clock or at least a terminal for accessing the portal. Regardless, there's data on the "island" already, but I think the "wireless hot spot" idea was silly to begin with.

One website, http://www..com/2012/07/13/permit-for-new-air-conditioning-at-aunt-pollys-in-magic-kingdom/, said that the permit is for the entire building, and implied that only a portion is being used as a break room. It makes good sense to do the whole thing, so that later on you don't have to pay to have somebody come out twice.

However, the indoor castmember part of Aunt Polly's isn't too big, though there is a second floor. Re-doing the HVAC wouldn't be a big deal. Too bad they didn't build a utilidor underneath the river, stocking the restaurant wouldn't be an issue then.

They are indeed replacing the HVAC in the entire building, including the second floor break room.

A tunnel would have been handy, for sure.

Yeah probably not more than adding or removing a vending machine. TSI just does not have enough traffic to support AP opening again. TSI in general is just so run down. It is a great location to go and get away from the heavy crowds, but with nothing new since? Forever! It does not have a lot of appeal. Like 74' and other have said, they have not been on TSI in many many years.

I look at tsi in the catch 22 sense. There is less foot traffic because they are not spending money on updating the island and keeping staff on site for hospitality. You can not use the neglect as a reason to keep on neglecting a property.

The biggest problem with Aunt Polly's was the access, trying to get supplies over there and keep things stocked up. Then there was a separate raft just for maintenance and food and beverage and then you needed someone to drive the raft to the separate landing and then you had to wheel the supplies through the island. I guess it was just too much of a hassle.

They can easily get supplies during the off hours. Even if they need to deliver it during guest hours, it would add to the theme of tsi to have it delivered by boat.

They don't come close.

I was so upset when I went to Disney a few years back and went to bring DH to TSI and saw AP closed. When I was a child I would spend hours there. My brother loved running around the island, but the only thing that could get me over there was AP. I have so many memories of sitting with my mom on the porch and having lunch while my brother and father ran around the island. I will miss not being able to do this with my daughter. It was such a quiet place in the craziness that is Disney.
