Hey everyone i need some help please. My wife and i normally go during slower times, but we are planning on changing things up and going in the summer. Just booked August 8-14. Are we asking for trouble? We aren't too concerned with rides as much as we just want to be at Disney. I know this is very vague but what type of ride times can we expect? Example: haunted mansion in the late afternoons......15 mins, 30, 60,90? Im just trying to get an idea of what we are in for. We have gone before in Feb,may,Sept,Oct, and early Dec. Thanks for any info!

There are several sites that can give you pretty accurate predictions based on historical and other data. This one has the week of 8/10 as a 9 out of 11, so it'll be pretty crowded. I think most schools around the country are not yet back in session at that point.

We often go at the end of August, but have been during that time frame. The wait times were not to terrible for most rides at MK. Still had to fastpass Soaring and TestTrack at Epcot, TSM,TOT and RR at HS. This years crowd calender says differently then I remember from last year. Its worth checking out. For us school doesn't resume until mid August( N. Fl.) I have to chime in with the others the weather is muggy and hot, sticky hot.

It is hot, HUMID and crowded in August and it frequently rains in the afternoon/evening...which isn't to say you cannot have a good time! Just plan accordingly. 
My best advice for August is to make the most of the mornings!
I like the touringplans.com site best. A subscription will cost you $12, but you get what you pay for...and quite a bit more, IMO. There are also a million free sites, some know what they're talking about. Some don't. None give you everything you get from the touringplans site. And I don't work for them or get paid for that!! I really think it helps people, especially newbies!
I pay for it each year myself.

Crowds won't be too bad, but the heat, humidity, and terrifying thunderstorms are outrageous!

That's the same general time frame I go every year since 2010...and will be back this year (though, for half that week I'll be on the DCL Fantasy)...
You'll find that the second week (11 - 14) the parks really start to slow down. Kids are getting back into school around the country, etc. Luckily, my Kid's district always goes back late. Also, people don't normally like to shoehorn a trip in RIGHT before the kid goes back to school...rather have a few weeks to get back into the school year groove.
Haunted Mansion in the late afternoons will vary...but if you forced me to come up with an average, I'd say 30 minutes. Sourin' and Toy Story Mania will be 50 - 90 minute waits. Etc.
Do plan for rain. During that part of the year afternoon Thunderstorms (note...storms...not showers) will be common in the afternoon. Almost a daily experience. They tend to blow in early to mid afternoon, and rain for around 45 mins to an hour. So, be sure to take that into account if planning water park days.

Thanks everyone for you help.For the first time we are going to stay away from emh. Since this is a busy time to visit, do you think that's a good strategy? I just feel like the past few trips we have gone on, the parks that we went to that didn't have emh weren't as busy. Anyone have an opinion about emh during busy times?

yeah the morning ones im not so worried about. Im just thinking its going to be a better idea to stay away from the evening ones. Is there really fantasmic showings at 10:30 even though the park closes at 10? I find that odd. Sorry im all over the place with questions, were just really excited!

Busy times are when emh are a must if you plan to ride, but if not, it doesn't really make a difference.
If we hadn't used the early and very late hours in April--even as experienced with fp as we are-- we probably couldn't have ridden even a third of what we wanted to ride/do. Do the early hours and then go to another park.
Or, you could just do the late hours. In August, people are extra tired a little earlier than usual because of the extreme heat so they go back to the resorts to swim. We have found the late hours to be a good time because of this. However, nothing beats the early hours if you don't mind getting up early. You also beat a little of the heat and the rain.

I think EMHs should be avoided at all costs...except in July, August and September. In those months, I very much advise using the morning ones and hopping to a different park that afternoon.
Again, make the most of the mornings as it usually doesn't rain in the morning. Plus, you're ahead of the crowds and it is crowded in August.
People will say it is cooler, too, but it really isn't much cooler at eight than it is at nine, lol. You won't notice any difference, I don't think.
That's my advice!

glad I found this post - I was just about to ask the same question! We have always gone to WDW in January and have only been on two other trips at different times of the year (once first week of May and once week before thanskgiving). We want to squeeze another trip in for 2013 so I figured August was a good midpoint between the Jan trips. May have to rethink it with the weather....DH is not a fan of hot temps.

It isn't just the heat, which is almost always high 80s, low 90s. It is the humidity. It is wildly humid here in August. Last year, a bunch of folks up north had a heat wave with high humidity. In Orlando, we call that "summer." It isn't news. It just is.
Much like when it dropped below freezing here last year and everyone was talking about it, but people up north would say, "we call that winter."
If you aren't a fan of heat/humidity, you will want to pick a better month than August in which to visit Orlando!
Just an FYI. We'll still roll out the welcome mat if you come in August!

I have to agree that humidity is brutal (not just FL, but everywhere it is humid). Anyone who disagrees with the statement, "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" has never been where it is really humid. I have been in Vegas in August when it was 120, and it was better than when you are somewhere that is 85 and 90% humidity.
That combo of the heat and humidity really sucks the life out of you. And the air just sits on top of you. Honestly, I do not know how people lived (or still do) without a/c in places that are humid . I grew up with no a/c, but it was dry. So at least at night it cooled off a little bit.
I would say you need to be prepared to take more breaks; get out of the h+h and into the a/c more often.
