My new HDTV is awesome. Very good picture and I am very happy with it. But there is one problem. It's the Aspect ratio. I am one of those people who likes to watch my Dvds and Blu-rays and VHS ect. in the correct Aspect Ratio. When I had my 4:3 Tv I would still go for the widescreen version of the film over the fullscreen version so I could have the movie in the correct ratio. I am okay with the black bars. When I watch a movie that was shot in 4:3 on a widescreen tv I want those black bars on the side.
Anyways when I put the Little Mermaid and Pollyanna Dvds in my laptop (also my laptop is widescreen) they played in their correct aspect ratio. They do not have bars on the sides and they have small bars on the top and bottom. But when I play these movies on my new HDTV that is not the case. They either have black bars on the sides or they fill the screen. I could not get these films to play with the small black bars on the top and bottom. I set my Blu-ray player to 16x9 and I tried every setting on my new tv. The settings I have are 1.Normal 2. Panoramic 3. Zoom 1 4. Zoom 2 > Out of all these 4 settings Panoramic played Pollyanna and the Little Mermaid the best, but even with the Panoramic setting I was not getting the full picture. In fact I have 3 copies of the same edition of the Little Mermaid. So I used 2 of my copies for a test. I put one copy in my laptop and the other copy in my Blu-ray player and I put my HDTV on the Panoramic setting. I compared the two and I could see that on my laptop I was getting the whole picture but on the HDTV I was not getting the whole picture. On my laptop I had the little black bars on the top and bottom and on the HDTV it filled the whole screen.
I have my laptop computer set so that it will plays dvds perfect when it comes to the Aspect Ratio. It gives me the whole picture and it does not Stretch the picture or do anything to change anything about the picture at all. So I want a HDTV that can do just what my laptop computer can do when it comes to playing movies in Aspect Ratio. I am not sure if my HDTV can do this, so I am thinking about taking it back and getting another HDTV that can do this.
Aspect Ratio is just something that is very important to me when it comes to watching movies. To really give you an idea about how important Aspect Ratio is to me when it comes to watching movies I will give you this example. Let us say there is a film about TinkerBell talking and there are 15 Flowers on one side of her and 15 plants on the other side of her. I don't want the picture changed so it cuts it down to 14 Flowers on one side or her and 14 plants on the other side of her just so it will fill the screen on my HDTV.
