ASM Family Suite V. 2 POP Rooms

Need your expert opinions: Mom, Dad and 2 20-something kids (yes, they still go to Disney with us!) headed down to the World end of May. We have done connecting (not adjoining) rooms at POP and been very happy with that but I see the Family Suites at ASM are a bit cheaper. We will have our own car this time so the transportation is not an issue. Any reason to switch to ASM? Also, If we decide to go with 2 rooms at POP, is there a way to reserve on-line? In the past I always called in. Thanks!!

The family suites are slightly better suited to those with kid-kids but I’ve been in them with a group of adults and I didn’t have a problem. The only issue some have is there is only one bed and a the other is a pullout sofa bed. Even though the pullouts at Disney are good - it’s still not ideal for everyone. Other than that they’re pretty identical to connecting rooms.

You can book rooms from the WDW website.

If you do 2 rooms, you should eventually call in and have them link the 2 reservations so that they know you are traveling with each other; this way they will allocate the rooms so they are near each other.

There is a bedroom, two bathrooms, and a large living area, where the pull out beds are. It also has a kitchenette that you would not get at Pop, a larger fridge, coffee maker and microwave. DH and I have stayed in one just for us for the ability to have the kitchenette. We take cereal and breakfast items, coffee and our travel mugs so we can do breakfast and Coffee before dealing with the general public. This saves us about $20 to $25.00 a day for the two of us. When we visited they had a really nice dining set up that included some very nice nightly meal choice that were more than the standard burgers and pizza(which is also available) I understand that they have re-done the dining area just recently. I think you will enjoy the resort.

I have done it both ways (2 rooms and suite), the suites are very nice, but the only way I could see justifying the extra cost of the suite is if you will get use out of the kitchenette and plan on spending a fair amount of time in the room.

If you are going to be at the parks from open to close and/or are on the dining plan the extra features of the suite will be largely unused.

We stayed in one of the new family suites at AoA last March (just my mom and me for one night before our reservation at POR started) and we loved it. The rooms are huge, and all of the beds (pull-out and Murphy included) are comfortable. Depending on the size of your "kids," the pull-out might be a bit small, but overall it's doable. The AoA suites have two full baths (the master en-suite has a beautiful walk-in tiled shower, the other has a tub surround), a small kitchenette, a good-sized living area (where you'll find the pull-out), and a large eating area just inside the door (the table pulls down into a double-sized Murphy bed).

Not sure how the AoA suites compare to ASM, but I figure they're similar.

They have near the same specs on paper, but you would never know it by comparing the floor plans.

The ones at ASM were made by converting 2 connecting rooms into a suite. This drastically limited what they could do. On one side you have you basic value room where the beds have been removed and replaced with furniture that converts into a bed. On the other side they have added a wall to make a sort of master bedroom and the remaining area becomes a small kitchen. The two bathrooms are exactly the same as they were when the rooms were just regular rooms.

They were able to start with a near clean slate when they did AOA. They of course were limited to a particular footprint, but what happened in that footprint was not limited by existing, walls, plumbing, etc. This resulted in a much better laid out suite. The master bedroom has a much nicer bath, the floor plan does not feel as cramp, and the space can be used much more efficiently.

I stayed at ASM in the suites and hated them. I would go with two rooms. Everything just seems cramped in them and they don't seem to have much room to move.

That problem is largely fixed at AoA, but you are correct about the ones a ASM. They functionally work as a suite, but it is not a great floor plan.

I really loved the All Star Family Suites. I didn't find the rooms cramped at all, even with all of the fold outs in use. My family prefers them over 2 rooms, as we like knowing we will all be together, instead of hoping the Disney reservation gods will smile on us and give us rooms that connect.
