As Great As It Once Was?

I think alot of it is the memories you have of the old attractions. I miss alot of them too. Walt wanted the parks to keep changing- so enjoy the memories and enjoy the new rides too! There is a website for extinct attractions. I am sorry I do not have the address- but google extinct disney attractions and enjoy the website! They sell DVD's if that helps as well.

I think when you talk about this issue, you really can't speak in terms like "it isn't as good as it used to be" or generalizations like that. It is more complicated than that. That being said, I don't think every change that has been made at WDW is for the better. I perfer Horizions to Mission Space, I perfer World of Motion to Test Track, and I perfer Mr. Toad's Wild Ride to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. By no means do I think Mission Space, Test Track, and Winnie the Pooh are "bad" attractions. Actually I like all those attractions, but just not as much as the previous ones they replaced. Is that nostalgia? Maybe, but I just like those old ones better. That is just my opinion, most other people may like the new rides better and that is ok. I am not whining or complaining that those rides should never have been removed, I accept that they are gone and it won't prevent me from enjoying WDW.

What I don't understand is the mindset that "everything at WDW is great", "every new attraction is great" and "everyone who expresses an affection for an old attraction is wrong and stuck in the past". I feel it is more complicated than that.

With respect to your last paragraph, I don't think any post so far on this thread suggested what you have in quotation marks (especially the part about 'being wrong and stuck in the past'). Not everything there is perfect. I do, however, stand by my belief that WDW is as perfect (magical) as a place can be that is run by people...especially in our corporate world in the year 2006.

I agree too that it is more complicated than simple nostalgia. WDW is a place that we respond to emotionally, not logically. That's why we communicate and share with other on these boards who can relate. Why is it my eyes well up with tears every time I see the "Voyage Of The Little Mermaid'? That makes no sense to me. Is it because I used to watch it with my daughter when she was little? Who knows? Does it matter? No. It is what it is. WDW makes me feel good. I try to explain to people who have never been there why I am so attached, and I always get flustered and end up saying "You just have to go experience it to know what I mean.".

BTW, Bravesfn1, although I live in Atlantic Canada near Maine, I am wearing my Bears jersey as I type and have been a fan since 1984 (and, for my neighbors in New England, a Patriots fan since we first got US television stations in 1976 :) )

The cool thing to me about WDW is that there is always a new memory to make, and eventhough I can't ride some of my favorites from when I was young with my husband I get the even better gift of sharing the memories of them with him. The past is a great place to visit, but if you live there you miss out on today.

When it comes to the attractions the quality has always been the same, some people think one attraction is great were as others may think that that same attraction has been the worse idea Disney could ever come up with. Though some attractions can use some TLC, for the most part, Disney stands above the rest.
The big picture, and many complaints, are with the Cast Members. To be fair, the quality of cast members can fluxuate year to year. Most cast members are exceptional in what they do but there are the rare few that, for what ever reason, are subpar and can lead to a bad experience. For some reason most people glom onto just this one incident and wont let go. And then there are the other few cast members that are magical. They are the ones that can turn a visit into the best experience any guest can have. This is again what sets Disney apart from any other resort.
When a fan says the quality is going down it is because the work force lacks the experience we are used to.

I think that it is a combination of things...Disney is fantastic, and it completely is what you make of it. I feel the magic from the minute I walk in the park to the minute I leave. Do I miss the old Epcot? Of course. But I can still enjoy the new attractions and I feel that just as much magic went into many of them as did the old.

MK does need updating, but they are slowly getting around to it. It is much easier to update at DL when there are only two parks and not nearly as many resorts to upkeep. They are making progress and I am happy when they do what they can. (Except Stitch, the imagineers must have been out drinking the night they thought that one up!):veryconfu

In my experience, everything was always better "then", and I am experiencing something that's not as good as it was. What, am I living in a bad era or something? It'd be depressing if I believed that. It's all about making your own experiences.

So true. It's often said that we sometimes view the past through rose colored glasses. I expect that during every trip to WDW, the 'present' at that time will be as magical as the past.

I never meant to imply that Walt Disney World is not as great as it used to be. I don't think that, in my opinion it is still as great as it always has been. My whole point is in my opinion I like some of the now extinct attractions better than their replacements. That is not due to nostalgia, I just like them better. That was all I was trying to say, and I don't think the sky is falling because those attractions were removed. I am now done posting on this thread because I think everything I have to say about this topic has been covered.

I feel that the most magical time at Disney world occurs during the first couple of times you visit the world. During those trips, adults and kids alike are speechless at what they are seeing and experiencing, that you may not notice the fading paint or small chips in the paint, or cracked WED way track covers, etc....
This kind of stuff could be more noticeable for frequent visitors... who come looking for other things. If you are in the mood to see problems... then some small flaws may stick out.

Thanks for all your thoughtful comments. There were some really great points made, and some differences in opinion, but that is what makes these boards so great...people share thoughts, but respect each others opinions.
