Army Archerd: Still Packing Them In

(Variety) -- While "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" heads to its final primetime airings (Thursday night and June 27), the "live" "Millionaire" shows continue to pack 'em in at Disneyland's California Adventure and Dis-ney World in Florida with six shows daily and (non-cash) prizes for the eager contestants. And the demograph-ics at Disneyland's California Adventure will prove another point starting July 13 with the "Rockin' the Bay" show for which a special stage is being constructed to platform these acts in two-day sessions: the Beach Boys, Monkees, Temptations, Herman's Hermits, Blood Sweat & Tears, Commodores, Starship, Fifth Dimen-sion, Four Tops.

Damn, last quarter before the fiscal year ends, and Disney comes up with another desperate attempt to shore up attendance at DCA. At least this one looks like it has a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding since they have started giving away tickets for DCA again.

Disney's California Adventure Offers Summer Promotion

Disney's California Adventure Offers Summer Promotion

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Just a month after saying it had no plans for new summer deals, The Walt Disney Co.'s California Adventure theme park said on Tuesday it will offer a promotion throughout the summer months. The promotion by the year-old park comes as one of its major competitors, Universal Studios Holly-wood, also offers a major summer promotion, reflecting continued weakness for theme parks from out-of-town travelers, analysts said. Under its new promotion, California Adventure is offering adult admissions at the chil-dren's price of $35 through Sept. 3 for Southern California residents, said spokesman John McClintock. Chil-dren ages 3 to 9 accompanied by a paying adult get in free. California Adventure offered a similar promotion last summer, after the park got off to a disappointing start in its first few months of business. The California Adventure promotion puts Disney head to head with rival operator Universal Recreation Group, whose Univer-sal Studios Hollywood is offering free admission for a child 15 or under for every paid adult. That promotion is good for California residents, and runs through July 31. The repeated use of promotions during the normally busy summer season shows that, despite recent reports of improved attendance, theme parks would like to see their visitor volume higher still, said Brian Eisenbarth, an analyst at Davidson Investment Advisors. "Eco-nomic conditions aren't cooperating," said Eisenbarth, whose firm is a holder of Disney stock. "A lot of con-sumers are in a holding pattern right now, or are on the fence about doing a vacation." Eisenbarth said the targeting of locals by the two promotions represents a realistic strategy of going after people who can make trips with minimal planning.
