Sometimes they are cheaper and sometimes they are not... People like using them because they can still use Disney transportation and get points depending what hotel chain they have a card for..

Thats kind of what I am liking about them. I swore I'd never stay off site again, but that was because of having to drive to and from the parks. One of the places I'm looking at has a constant shuttle that runs to all the parks and DTD!

I did a little research on this recently comparing a Holiday Inn at DTD vs staying POFQ and the price difference was very little. I want to say it would have been a little more than $100 savings. I only considered it since it had very good reviews on Trip Advisor and figured I would save a ton of money staying off site, and that was not the case with this hotel and the dates I was looking at. Maybe savings would be more at other hotels or at other times of the year.

Which resort? That sounds promising.

I know that once we stayed at the DTD area, and the bus service was not near what you get at the onsite hotels. They tend to drop off and pickup a little further than you would walk to the resort buses, not a big deal arriving, but seems much further at the end of the day. Unless you are staying at the Hilton these hotels do not allow you to the the extra magic hours, but then again not everyone does those. We used points and stayed last year during Thanksgiving offsite, so gave up some of the benefits of staying onsite, vs a free place to stay for a week.

Generally, off-site will be cheaper. The reason I've never stayed off-site is the convenience and being submerged in "Disney" means more to me than cost. But that's just me.
I think thats where I am at right now Monty. For this 3rd trip, I really want to CONSUME Disney!!!

So far, my only off-site stays have been when my ex-FIL had a vacation home and offered a free room... Free is worth the "inconvenience" LOL!

I really think you should stay onside next time, Britt. You need a great trip full of Disney magic to make up for this last trip. If just the five of you go, you can rent points for a very reasonable cost or stay at a moderate with a discount.

If you’re thinking about staying in the DTD area, don’t just look at the room rates.
You’ll find they all have a “Daily Resort Fee” some as much as $12. This covers
parking, bus service, pool activities/towels ……

Just state the rate, don't play games to give the impression you're cheaper.

Hotels in DTD, then staying onsite?
Doubletree Suites is much cheaper and all rooms are suites. They even have two bedroom suites.
Nice large rooms compared to mods and some deluxe. They have pretty good bus service, but you do have to walk further at the parks. They drop you at the TTC for MK. They have delicious cookies at checkin. DTD is within walking distance.
You simply have to make a reservation and watch the site constantly to get a really good price. When I made our last reservation there, it started out at somewhere around 200.00, but by the time we went, it was down to 89.00 with AAA discount. Once we got it for 79.00 and another time 119.00. You just have to be deligent and watch the site. The clue that they are about to offer a discount is that the site goes down for a while. I called back and changed it three times last time to end up with the low price. They have a really good breakfast buffet. They have a person in the lobby who will try to sell you a timeshare. I have no problem telling them nicely that we aren't interested. They'll offer you all kinds of things like free stays etc. However, once we've told them no, they leave us alone.
You can also get a reasonable room at the Hilton which has EMH's, but the rooms are small and older. I prefer the Doubletree. I like having a separate bedroom and the little kitchenette. The pool is nothing great and you have to pay 10.00 for parking.
You do not get EMH's, so if that's important don't stay at the Doubletree. We only stay there on our weekend trips where we don't need EMH''s. Long trips are always onsite.

If you start looking around a bit, you will find that you can get 1-4 bedroom condos for less than the cost of a WDW moderate. They'll have kitchens, really nice master suites, dining areas, living rooms, at least 2 bathrooms, patio or balcony, and washer/dryer (sometimes full size).

Even if you never cook, the full-size fridge is nice.

You get a lot more room for your dollar off the WDW property.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with WDW rooms. God knows I've stayed in them enough. :)

Remember that a "constant" shuttle may also mean we leave every 30 mins. If you miss the shuttle or don't fit, next one will be by 30 mins after that. And they can't just reroute or add another bus like WDW could. Get the full details of any off property shuttle. I think the DTD hotels run much closer schedule to a on property resort shuttle, but double check if that matters to you.

I will stay on HPB only when nothing else on property is available. From what I have found the pricing is on par with a discounted moderate resort. However, you really need to check the final pricing. Unlike the Disney resorts where there are no additional fees, the resorts on HPB can charge parking, resort, wifi, etc, fees. Quite often a $100 room rate turns into $130 by the time you are done.

While the bus service is better then the shuttles offered from off property resorts, it is still not very good. The buses stop and every single resort on HPB. If you are at one of the first pickups it can take a good 1/2 an hour or before you head to the parks.
