I'm driving down from Central NY & we are getting a major snow storm is this weekend but will be leaving for FL on Dec 21st. I will be traveling on NY 90/87 to 287 in NJ to I-95 down to WDW. Are Studed Snow Tires allowed in Southern States? :veryconfu

Where do you live? I was born and raised in "Northern Central NY" also.

I can't imagine snow tires being a problem. They're just tires, made of rubber. Plus it snows in the South occasionally.

BTW - is there a reason you're taking that route? Because it's MUCH faster to take I-81 to Route 17 in Virgina (Winchester) to I-95 (Fredericksburg).

Trust me, I drive up to Syracuse 1-2 times a year from NC!

Laura, the question is about studded snow tires, regular rubber wouldn't be an issue, but metal studs tend to actually damage pavement.

Different states have different rules. Go to this site, it breaks it down state by state.

According to that site, they are prohibited in FL, and are only allowed in GA & SC DURING snow/ice conditions. Do you really want to risk a ticket in 3 different states? Perhaps you could use chains if the weather is that bad when you leave home? I finally threw out the set that we had when we first drove down here 25 years ago.

First of all....

You'll wear out your studs on this trip (2500 miles) making them useless upon your snowy arrival home. You will need to replace them when you return.

But my main concern is for your sanity from all that noise for 20 some hours!

I'd buy a set of good all season tires for this trip and get them changed prior to your trip.

Second question....

What type of car is this?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to fly?

I figured 2500 miles, I took an average of 20mpg, multiplied by a very conservative $3.00/gal and your looking at $375 just in gas alone.

Then you take the 40 hrs you'll spend driving vs a maximum house door to house door time if you fly of approx. ~ 10hrs

Thanks Everyone,

I had thought there was a restriction but didn't know what it was. I'm leaving the studded tires off until I get home in January. I do have all-season tires and they seem to be working ok for the storms we have had so far here in the Utica/Old Forge area.

The reason for the route I'm taking is that I'm picking up my sister & neice in southern NJ then continue on down south. They are going to help with the driving. Traffic around Wash. shouldn't be a problem as I used to live there not too long ago. And I know some routes down there I could use incase there is a problem but at 9AM on a Saturday morning I'm not going to run into "Rush Hour".

2nd reason why we are driving is I DON"T fly!!!!!!!! This is the only way I'm getting down to FL.

Yes as far as I know they are not allowed in Florida because my Uncle who lives down there has mentioned it to us if we were driving down from PA.

It's the safest way to travel. I've flown over 3 million miles in my life and I'm still here to tell the story... most of my flying being over bodies of water and crossing the US.

Wonder why when a commercial plane crashes it's big news? Because it happens to rarely.

You could also walk I suppose :)

Actually there is one form of transportation that is statistically safer than flying, the hovercraft.:lookaroun

touché!

However, I'd rather not cross the Atlantic to get to WDW in a hovercraft. It might take.... longer than a while
