Apartment hunting: How soon is too soon?

I'm moving to Orlando in June or July of next year, and I am trying to figure out a good time to visit Orlando and look for apartments. My question is: how many months in advance would be good for looking at apartments? Due to availability and whatnot, and since I have never lived on my own before, I am unsure how to approach this.

Thanks for the help everyone! :):):):)

I started in November for a June move. Visited lots of places and narrowed it down. Came back down April 1st to re-inspect area and put in application. Sold everything and moved down only to have to move again 10 months later when the place went condo.

Apartments are hard to come by now in my area (West Kissimmee) most have gone condo.

I wouldn't even attempt a move here without at least 10 grand and a back up plan. I have seen too many people leave within the first 6 months because it is so expensive here and the job situation is a joke.

Best of luck to you

The prices of apartments fluctuate monthly so be careful when pricing them out. I have seen prices gone up over $170 for the same one bed room unit in four months. I would start looking at places 3-6 months out. I will agree with Mom2of2 about the current job situation down in Orlando at the current time is pathetic. It’s pretty hard to get called for a non entry level position when you live out of state.

Good Luck

Luckily, I am going to have much more than 10 grand when I move.. by the time I move I will have been saving almost all of my earnings for 3 years.

You guys say 3-6 months.... what I am curious about is when looking for apartments, finding one that will have the availability for the July 09 move. I'm not sure how typical apartments work, if the availability fluctuates drastically or if you have to apply months in advance or a month prior? I'm so new to this.

Thanks for all the advice! :)
