AP renewal questions

My AP will expire the middle of this month and since this is my first time renewing, I have some questions.

I know I have seen before where you can get 3 months for 'free' when renewing. Was that just a promotional/limited time thing or does it happen at certain times every year?

If I don't renewing within 30 days will everything become essentially dead? Meaning, to start up the pass again I will have to go through the whole process again and get a new pass? Which probably means the cost will have gone up too right?

I think thats all for now. Thanks.

The extra 3 months was a promotion that is no longer running. If you pass 30 days you can still renew but at that point you need to do the math to see if renewing is the best option. If you AP expires on 3/1/2012 and you renew on 4/30/2012 your pass will still expire on 3/1/2013. If you were to buy a new AP on 4/30/2012 , your AP would not expire until 4/30/2013. The renewal discount is only about 10% and once you pass 30 days buying a new AP and getting that time back will sometimes be a better option.

Being a Florida resident, you also have the option of renewing your AP on the monthly plan if you wish. When you renew, you don't pay the 1 day ticket price down payment, just the a slightly modified first month of the monthly payments. If you wait and get it later, you can still use the monthly payment plan if you want but one "new" AP's you pay the cost of 1 day ticket down plus the 1st month payment.

That might be something you will want to factor in as well to see if it's worth it to you to renew or simply get a new one. It really depends on how much time you want to lose backdating the pass expiration date, you know?

I am doing the monthly plan now and will probably continue doing that whenever i renew. We have no immediate plans to visit the World right now so I am trying to figure out if it's worth renewing now as a "just in case" precaution. There have been multiple times where we just have nothing to do on a weekend and head up for a couple days.

Making financial decisions is not my strong suit :hammer:

I really wish they would offer this to everyone, as Universal does.

While at one point I was renewing every year, I am only getting down about twice a year right now (sometimes less), so I go six or twelve month spans without an AP these days. If they offered a recurring monthly AP, I'd never let it lapse, plus I'd come down more.

This is really the big reason that I don't come more. When you have an AP an extra trip here and there seems almost cheap - when you don't, it feels like it costs way way more. I don't envy families that have to buy four or more tickets per trip - it's the most costly thing in the budget unless you stay at a deluxe. I honestly feel "ripped off" (probably more accurately, I'm "spoiled" by AP value if you use it enough) at the regular ticket prices, but the price of an AP has gone up such that if I don't have one and I budget it in that $500+ is a large sum.

Example, I went last May knowing I'd be back this fall (which didn't happen), and my 4-day park hopper was $300. Before I left I upgraded to an AP (and will be using it again in April for another short trip). At least it will pay for itself, as buying another $300 ticket for four days would have been more than the $200 I paid to upgrade. But after that, it will be quite awhile before I come back (another 6-12 months) because I'm not going to want to lay out $300 for 4-days, or another $500+ for an AP before then.

If they had a monthly AP available for me, though, I'd keep it going perpetually and make time for more frequent visits. I've looked in to non-expiring, but it always seems like it would cost even more than just playing the AP game.

Oh I hear you. I'm just glad they at least FINALLY decided to offer it to Florida residents. I mean, they've been doing things like the "Fun Card" at Busch Gardens and Sea World where you pay for one day but can come back all year (AP basically for the cost of a 1 day ticket) for years and it's worked really well for them. Both parks I think realized how much money locals spend when they can come as much as they want. Disney not doing a monthly plan at the very least has been so counter-intuitive in my opinion!!

Hopefully, they'll see that the Florida Resident monthly payments are a success and open it up to others. It's really SO much easier to have it come out a little each month than a huge chunk at once.

But I totally feel your pain. Until this past renewal, it was a process trying to figure out how to justify the expense for the passes - and some years we couldn't and didn't get them. Disney is definitely ahead of the game the years we DO have them for sure.

I too would love a monthly payment plan for my AP. I always hate mid-February when I have to drop $400 to renew my AP.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reason it's only offered to Florida residents has to do with some legal issue involving them not being to go after residents of certain states who don't pay? I remember reading something to that effect.

I dont know for sure either, but I would assume there is some legal reason they don't offer it. If there is not, then shame on them!

I can absolutely say that we have gone far more this year with having an AP than we would have without. And I doubt we would have purchased them if we would have had to pay $1000 (for both of ours) up front versus $50/month.
