I purchased a laptop yesterday, but don't know for the life of me how to hook it up to the internet. I plugged the internet cable in to my family's DSL box, nothing. Not really sure what to do past that. Internet Explorer is already downloaded on it, so I'm really at a loss. Thanks for helping!

who is your internet service provider do you have that installed onto your computer like SBC YAHOO do you have that installed.

2nd of all is your laptop wireless if so you can go buy like linkes and hook that up and then you do not need your cord

I'm...pretty sure DSL is my internet service provider, but I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to computers, so I could be wrong.

And yes, my laptop is wireless...what exactly is it that I need to buy so I can use it without cords?

I'm pretty sure I have an Ethernet card. I'll check the box really fast.

Edit: 10/100 Mbps built-in Ethernet...would that be what I'm looking for? Then yes, my computer has an Ethernet card.

"DSL" cannot be your ISP. DSL is a form of internet connection that can be provided, but it itself cannot provide. The ISP is someone like Verizon, Comcast, or Time Warner. If you can figure out who your ISP is (not neccessarily one of those three,) call them for questions.

Sir90210 is right. Who is the company who you send your check to every month for service?

My advice:

Turn off your DSL box, and your laptop. Then turn on the DSL first, wait for it to come up completely (should take about 60 seconds) THEN turn your laptop on.

Also, buy a router as Dreamteacher said, this will give you a layer of security between your computer and the 'net. I recommend a Linksys, but Netgear is a decent brand as well. The router that she was talking about also included Wireless (wifi) functionality. Did your laptop come equipped with that? If so, i recommend you get a router with wireless built in. 'G' is the current wireless speed, an older, slower version is 'B', i recommend G. If you don't have, or don't want wireless connectivity, just get a DSL/Cable router/switch. this will allow you to connect multiple computers to your internet connection as well. Don't go to Wal*Mart though, the kid behind the counter won't have any idea of what he's talking about. Go to Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Max, Comp USA, or a similiar store. The person working there will be much more knowlegable.

and again, if you do get a router, turn off the DSL box, plug it all together, and turn on the DSL first, the router second (at this point, your computer should be fine, you might have to reboot, but hopefully it won't necessary)

Internet Explorer is simply a browser--a program used to view web pages. There are tons of browsers. So, having it installed on your computer doesn't mean your internet will necessarily work. As a sidenote, I suggest downloading a GOOD browser. Firefox is the cheapest and easy alternative, and pretty much destroys IE on multiple levels.

To be honest, the best bet is to call your ISP (whomever you send your check to every month) to find out the appropriates steps to set everything up. Otherwise, it will get confusing, especially since we don't know specifics. :)

And, as others have said, DSL is a connection speed (like Dial-up, Cable, etc.) It's most definitely not your provider  To go wireless, you need a router. A router sets up a wireless network that enables you to surf the net wirelessly.

If everthing is right you got a password and a username, you have to logon at your provider the first time you use you DSL line...

This is neded only once... but you have to have something from your provider...

Thanks for all the advice!

And I admit, I'm really not all that versed in computers...How was I supposed to know DSL wasn't my provider?? Happy to provide you all with a laugh, though

We have a laptop (soon to be 2) plus my desktop running. We have the Linksys router that we got in WalMart for about $100 2 years ago. We also have DSL. Once you buy all the stuff you need you need to set up a wireless network inside your home so the laptop and DSL modem recognize each other.

You will need the cord from the router to be plugged into your modem. Once you are all plugged in and turned on go to My Network Places on your computer and the wizard will walk you thru it. We have the printer networked also so the kids can do their reports on the laptops then print thru my printer...love how it know to turn itself on and screw up my games.

I also use Firefox instead of IE, it takes a little getting used to at first, but I love it!
