I apologize for the long post. I have 2 yucky stories and 1 nice one -
We received free fast passes two years ago. We were staying in a studio on the 3rd floor of BLT (south wing). One night, we noticed our carpet was wet in one spot. We assumed our wet, hanging raincoats caused it. The next day the spot was bigger - and bigger - and kept getting bigger. My daughter also saw that while sitting in bed, ants were walking all over the walls. They were also in the kitchen. The manager came to our room with housekeeping. He said we should expect ants since we're on the 3rd floor and close to the ground.
He also said that the air conditioner in the room next door broke and that's why our carpet was soaked. He didn't have any other room to put us in. He gave us 3 free fast passes for the next day (so 12 total for the 4 of us) and said things would be fixed while we were out enjoying the parks. He also said he would check on us to make sure things have improved. The next evening, we returned to a room without ants, clean sheets, etc. and a very loud, vacuum-sized, portable dryer sitting right as you walked in the room. We called down to the desk immediately. They sent some poor kid up to retrieve the dryer. We never heard from anyone again.
Of course, imagine our surprise when this year we walked in our room to the same dryer! (1 bedroom - 5th floor of the north wing of BLT this time) We went to the front desk. They had no idea what was going on. We went back to the room and called housekeeping. Same thing. No idea. We tried calling the front desk again. Nobody picked up. We got the answering machine. After we finally got through, they sent maintenance up to retrieve the dryer. The men said they came to fix the air conditioner since we complained about it - but we never called. They had no idea who called. When we got the manager on the phone, they said that they were going to find out what happened, but they were having problems with their messaging system and couldn't leave a message. They asked for my cell phone so they could call us tomorrow while we were in the parks and explain what happened after they figured it out. They did call with an explanation. Turns out it was our neighbor's air conditioner again. What are the odds? They put $100 back on my credit card to apologize.
I did receive 25 free fast passes (for 5 people) once at DAK, but it was for a happy reason and not floods or ants. A CM on the Wild Africa Trek hooked me up with someone from their conservation team. That person mentioned Disney's efforts with GRACE Gorillas in the French Congo. I created a unit for my high school French classes to learn about the countries, the animals and GRACE. The unit morphed into an Earth Day presentation for the middle and elementary schools - with one of my kids in a gorilla costume. It was fun and interactive and highlighted the importance of recycling small electronics.
We left decorated boxes in each main office after our presentations. The children brought in old cell phones and small electronics that we shipped to ECO-Cell. I kept in touch with the CM and sent him videos and pictures of what we did to support Disney and GRACE. He asked me to stop by during our next trip. We took pictures with his manager. They presented me with a goodie bag (a large Disney Conservation tote with lots of items) and the fast passes.
We're still doing the presentation and recycling drive through the chaos of the past year. We've also added new activities to help Give Kids the World Village. Over time, my kids may not remember French, but hopefully they will remember to be aware and to help others.
That gorilla shows up in class now and then, too...
