Great news considering I heard traditional animation was going the way of the dinosaur.

OS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hand-drawn animation, out of fashion in the computer age, experienced a rescue worthy of a fairy tale on Thursday, when Walt Disney animators announced they would bring back the art form to the big screen.

"We will be bringing back hand-drawn (two-dimensional) films," said Disney's Ed Catmull, the President of Pixar and Disney Feature Animation.

Animators refer to hand-drawn animation as "two dimensional," as opposed to computer-generated animation, referred to as 3D.

Pixar created "Toy Story" and other computer animation hits, but was acquired by Walt Disney Co. last year.

Speculation has swirled since then over whether Catmull and Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, who took control of the ailing Disney animation facility, would reestablish the art form that made Disney the world's preeminenent animator.

All of Disney's feature animation films in production at the time of the Pixar deal were computer animated.

"Now that's we're a year into it, people want to know how it's going," Catmull told analysts at a Disney conference monitored by Web cast. He said Disney would do both computer animation and hand-drawn animation.

Lasseter spent several years as a Disney animator, but left over creative differences to form Pixar, where he was considered the main creative force. He revered Walt Disney, who with a group of legendary animators known as the "Nine Old Men," made such hand-drawn classics as "Cinderella" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

When Disney bought Pixar to try to revive its flagging animation program, Catmull and Lasseter took charge of both studios, which are run separately.

At least 300 Disney animation staff were laid off or reassigned in the months following the leadership change.

Catmull and Lasseter gave the first descriptions on Thursday on how they reshaped story lines of Disney films already in production, canceled others and restructured how the Disney artists work.

"Pixar is still Pixar -- nobody left," Catmull said. "At Disney, you have these remarkable artists there ... they were not kneaded together in the right way. At the heart of it there has to be a director and the director has to have a vision."

Catmull said there were no plans to merge the studios or to limit them to a certain type of animation.

"We always believed that quality is the best business plan," he said.

He and Lasseter showed clips from upcoming films, including "Ratatouille," "Meet the Robinsons," "Wall-E," "American Dog" and "Toy Story 3."

Wow. That's great news. It's going to be awesome to see a 2D animation film again. I just hope the story and charm is up to par with what Pixar generally puts out. I would have loved to see the clips for Wall-E, American Dog, and Toy Story 3 as well!

I don't care what the cartoon is as long as it has decent drawing....to me trhat's the best part. I mean the whole computer thing is cool but it does not have anywhere near the "heart" that traditional does.

Thanks for the post and the link. I've been going nuts since yesterday looking for info about this after I heard like a 15 second mention about this on the local all news radio station. :snore:

I posted it earlier this morning when I came home from work. when i woke up, I was unable to find it so I decided I would repost it. I figured some other fans would appreciate it even though it's not a ride. I'm hoping it will help bring back animation to MGM studios.

YES!! Lets hope that happens...MGM gets it's Animation BACK in it's "Animation Tour". It's a bit pointless at the moment really....though i still pass through every trip.

This is great to hear...i just hope when "2D" does return, it is in the style we are thinking it will be and not just 2D drawn/ put together like a CGI film. I honestly hope they still remember how to do it the proper way, and make more Magic there in the Animation Department.

What would be truly wonderful is seeing all those animators back in business...and back in Orlando!

I totally agree with you on this. CG is cool and all, it looks realistic and is great, but its all about the laughs and the comedy. While there isnt really anything wrong with that it just seems like other studios have been putting out these types of films and because of it being a "trend," disney jumped on the bandwagon and the whole integrity of animation has fallen dramatically.

Disney's holiday release at the end of the year is Enchanted, which is combining 2D hand-drawn animation and live action. It also featuring new original songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. It will be interesting to see how the public turns out for this movie. I think that this movie's popularity either way will let Disney decide how in depth they want the 2D animation department to go.

Though it would be really nice to see the studio in Florida used again for animation, I don't think that will ever happen again. Which is rather unfortunate since Florida was designed with animators in mind. I don't think Disney will re-expand it's unit for quite some time. They are still going to work with a limited crew and do the norm of laying off after every feature.

As for "heart" (and this coming from a completely 2D guy)...look no further than Monsters Inc. The finish of that movie is amazing and tears me up every single time. 2D only has heart when the story is good...truly...I know people have been talking story and 2D since it went down the tubes, but when it comes down to it...it is the story that makes or breaks a feature.

Take Atlantis for example, 2D + bad story = UGH (I personally liked this movie and it's different art style)...also Treasure Planet, 2D (with some 3D) + mediocre story = UGH (again, another personal like... )...Lion King + good story, Lilo & Stitch + good story, Little Mermaid + good story = Amazing. (Let's not forget Black Cauldron.....)

I've always been a huge proponent of 2D and continue to be (though my posts may not always seem that way), I went to school and focused completely on 2D animation, but only since it's demise have I truly understood the importance of story over artwork. Now, it doesn't matter whether it's 2D or 3D...as long as the story is good I will generally love the movie.
