Any vegetarians tried Jiko?

We are looking at restaurants for our upcoming trip and have tried just about everything but have never tried Jiko. What can I say, we just don't make it out to the AK Lodge very often. We tried Boma on our last trip and were pleasantly surprised (there was so much to choose from!), even though we're not big on buffets. We would prefer a quieter/full-service restaurant, though, and want to try Jiko this time. I've heard good things but we're both vegetarians and wonder if there are any other "veggies" out there who can give us a review?

The menu looks good, but I just want to hear about your experience.

Thanks!

I love Jiko! In the past I have eaten fish there.. but lately I have gotten into the routine of ordering the olive flatbread with a side of Macaroni & Cheese (don't laugh.. it is the world's BEST mac & cheese)

I believe they normally serve one tofu dish.. but I have never tried it. Aside from that I wouldn't say there are many entrees there that don't feature meat. However, there are lots of amazing appetizers that you could mix together into one heck of a meal!

I would give it a try. There isn't anything like it.. it is so quiet and relaxing! I have never tried something there I didn't like.

Thanks, Ducky_Love! I can't wait to try it. I guess if you call 24 hours in advance they can whip something up for you. Everything sounds/looks good, but the entree on the menu doesn't wow me. So, hopefully they can do something else to accomodate us!

Last time I was there they had 1 vegetarian entree. It pretty much sounded like a veggie stir fry with african spices. There are, however, many vegetarian appetizers, sides and salads that could combine to make a great meal.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I can tell you that anything at Jiko is good. There are a number of vegetarian appetizers, although some of them contain dairy. My favorites are the Maize & Sweet Potato "Tamales"; Taste of Africa (various dips and breads); Kalamata Olive Flatbread; and the Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion Salad... all yummy. There's also a Butternut Squash Soup.

Have fun and enjoy. :p
