Any Recent Room Upgrades?

My family and i are going to the world in August. We have historically stayed at the POLY ever since our kids were born because of the ease of the monorail. This year we chose to stay at CBR because our kids are older now (7yrs olds) and we think that utilizing the buses wont be that much of a hassle for them. I was reading through some older threads and saw that some people who stayed at CBR were upgraded to Beach Club etc with no extra charge. Some said that they had mentioned it was a Honeymoon etc but others had said it was for no reason at all. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced something like this recently. Coincidently, when we will be down there it will be my DW and mine 10th wedding anniversary. Any thoughts?

While free upgrades do happen from time to time, they are becoming increasingly rare. They are done based on operational needs of the resort. With the resorts running at very high capacity there simply are fewer and fewer free upgrades to be had. The surest way not to get one is to ask for one. By policy, if you ask for an upgrade and it is available they will have to charge you for it. A complete resort upgrade like you described is typically only done as a DVC promotion or because rooms were taken out of service at your resort resulting in no more rooms being available at your resort.

If that insider works for the resort doing the room assignments, maybe.

I wish there was some magic formula I could give to you but there really is no trick that will work. Room assignments are done before you even get there. I have been told that some CM's look at celebrations and might give out any upgrades based on that, but it is not official policy to do this.

We got an upgrade to a lake view room at Wilderness Lodge in May, but it was a view through the trees. We were grateful though.

We did online check in, but hadn't made any room requests.

The previous year we requested a room on a high floor, and ended up at ground level, with the creepy crawlies.

At check in- we ask for the nicest room available, and ask for a specific area. At CBR, the CM was so very nice. He tried to upgrade us to a "preferred" room, to no avail. But our room was nice. At WL, we got upgraded to bunk bed rooms, and our request was honored to be close to the pools.
I am also hoping for an "upgrade" of some sort when we go in Sept. (staying at the POLY). We'll be married 15 years!:D

We have stayed at the POLY the past 4 times we went with our boys. It was just easier with the monorail having twins in a double stroller. Now that they are 7 we decided to stay at CBR which is where my wife and i stayed many times before we had our kids. We felt that they were old enough to deal with the buses and also it was about a $3k difference in price. Although we are excited to go it is a little hard not to go back to our "second home" at the POLY. The one year we did go to the POLY we asked for a room in Samoa facing the pool because the kids loved standing on the balcony and looking at it. They couldnt do that for us when we got there so they upgraded us to Concierge level which was awesome. Just a tip, dont forget to remember that if you get concierge level, they offer free alcohol at night. i didnt find that out until the second to last night before we left. Stupid me walked dwon every night to the bar to get my wife and i drinks

I've been upgraded an almost weird number of times in my Disneygoing history. Multiple years we were upgraded to a tower room at CR, one year we were upgraded to an MK view at the Poly and another time we were upgraded to concierge at the Poly (boy was that one ever nice, even though it was for a super-short stay.) I've never had an upgrade where they actually put us at a different resort, though.

I have no idea how or why I ended up getting upgraded, but I never asked for any of them. I just showed up for check in and they told me they'd upgraded us. I like to think maybe they take pity on me since I'm one of those suckers who usually pays the (insane) rack rates for the rooms. ;)

Amusingly, after all of those free upgrades one of the trips where we got no freebies whatsoever was our honeymoon! We even had it on the reservation, and the only thing we got the whole trip was a card in our room, and it said Happy Anniversary (d'oh)! :D

Well here's hoping thatour 10th wedding anniversary is going to be enough ammo!!!
On our last trip we were actually on property the day of our 5th anniversary and we only got buttons (that we had to write our own name on... when did that stop anyway?). Maybe you'll be luckier or maybe on our 10th we will be! :)

It definitely increases your chances. My cousin was the convention center manager at the Grand Floridian for awhile and every time we would go to Disney, I would book a garden view room there but "magically" we always got the gold key and a ride to Sugar Loaf!

We just got back last weekend from a week long stay at Saratoga Springs. We booked a standard room but when we logged in a few days before leaving we saw that our reservation had been changed to a 1 bedroom villa. That really made the trip for us!
