Any news on the Contemporary Resort Rehab?

Really, when you think about it, the whole idea of a resort called Contemporary is silly. Keeping the look fresh and, well, contemporary, is fighting a losing battle. But, as this was pretty much the first WDW resort, they are stuck now. I agree though, the Jetsons look has to go (how ugly are the cast member uniforms)?!?! You guys are right though, the place has looked bad for years.

The information that I have heard (from a very reliable source) was that the rooms would be redone in earth-tones (which will always look somewhat modern) and the duvets would be all-white (which is very trendy in hotels now). Also, the desks would be glass/steel (modern) and the rooms would have plasma or flat-screen TV's.

Now, that being said, the rooms will hold up better than the current look did.

Also, with the destruction of the one wing, the hotel will become, of course, smaller...word is that they will be catering more towards conventions at the hotel, as they have the ability to make a lot more money from these guests. Also, they would prefer to have the families stay at WL and AKL, which are great for familes, but not for business travelers.

They already have one room redone in one of the wings...One of my friends that works there was in it and said it was beautiful. Very neutral, as Speck said. Flat screen TVs and very much catetring to the convention guests. It will be a nice change, when complete. (or started :lookaroun )

I have to admit to being very taken aback when I was on the monorail last year and noticed the big huge chunks MISSING out of the side of the building. Just big huge gouges in the cement. If it wasn't for the monorail, the place would really be a lost cause. It's a shame, because it was once so...contemporary. Maybe they should restore it and change it's name to "Nostalgia"?

I have a reservation there in the garden wing this May. Are you all saying that I should stay somewhere else? I don't want to pay the $$$ if it is going to be disgusting.

People stay in the garden wings for access to the monorail that is cheaper than the tower rooms. If you don't *need* monorail access, your money will be better spent elsewhere. If you do need monorail access, check out rates at the Poly to see how they compare.

That one "redesigned" room in the garden wing is probably a model room that was creatyed to see how their iodeas would look in a full size room. I can't wait to see this renovation really get going and see this signature Disney hotel restored to its former glory.

Here's a fabulous video from 1971. Its a commercial for US Steel who were heavily involved in the construction of the CR. Maybe the resort should go for the retro modern look, a bit like 1971. :)

I have heard form a CM that worked at saratoga springs that there is a rumor within the CM circle that they might become time-share units because there arent timeshares really really closer to the MK. He also said the renovation would entail a outer skin to make the place look better and of course the insides will get done.

I heard this first hand from a CM, but I am not taking it to the bank as of yet.

Except for those at the Wilderness Lodge....

And yes, jmuboy, it is a model room. Guests are not staying in it.

Yea I kinda figured someone would say that after I typed it. :brick:

If I remember correctly it was going to be promoted by being a rocks throw to the park. But like I said I just heard this from a guy at the desk. As I have heard rumors before from CM's, I am just passing it along.

One wing will be torn down and converted into DVC.

I wonder if both wings will become DVC or just one wing like mentioned above. it is important that the Symetry of the resort is maintained....each wing matching the other. That is the one thing that always bothered me about the new conference center. It kinda throws off the blance of the reosrt. But it is low enough to the ground that it does not matter.

I agree. I think they either need to keep the symmetry or completely get rid of the symmetry style. I think the hotel could still work well with a brand new wing that is not the same shape, but it needs to explicitly be asymmetrical then. I would love to see it designed more along the lines of the Walt Disney Theater in LA. That would be neat to have those metalic shapes reaching up toward the monorail as it enters the A-frame.

The wings aren't exactly symmetrical as is. The North wing is larger than the South wing and juts out into the parking lot much further.

I completely adore the Contemporary as it is now and have stayed there four times (two in the tower, two in the north garden wing) and have never had any problems. It has always been very clean (my mother is obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness, so if it reaches her standards, it's clean) and neat, the staff has been great, and we love it. I love the bright colours in the rooms and it's a shame if they make everything neutral now.
