Any news on the Contemporary Resort Rehab?

I was looking through some photos on laughingplace.com and came across this picture of some rehab work going on at the marina at the CR. Marina Rehab

Is this the start of the much romoured CR rehab, or is it just some general rehab work?

the guy at the poolside bar thingy (i forgot the name of it) told me that is the "real" poolside snack bar and drinks bar and stuff and that they are going to have food and stuff in buildings instead of just the drinks under the umbrella (which is there now).

no mention of when it was going to be finished (i didnt ask :( )

The major renovation was to begin already, but has been delayed (my guess is because of the higher occupancies this year).

My guess is that it will not begin until after the peak summer season.

I really hope they start it soon. by Disney Standards, that place is disgusting.

If you're ever on the resort monorail take a peek out the lagoon side window when you're stopped inside the contemporary, the cobwebs, dust, mold and general neglect you can see on the building's large windows is awful

My cousin who was a cast member last semester stayed in one of the suites just for teh sake of saying he stayed in one, he said there was a hole in the celing.

I too have read some reports about the poor shape of the Contemporary Resort. Unlike the Polynesian, which seems to get CONSTANT attention, the Contemporary sems to have been neglected for a while. The age of this hotel does not help matters either. However, its scheduled for a rehab and will hopefully return from the rehab good as new. I'll be really happy once work actually starts.

One rumor I'll through out is that the Garden Wings are rumored to become DVC Units since they rarely fill up. And these rooms are in BAD condition, worse then the tower rooms.

My last stay at the Contemp (earlier this year)...I was disgusted...Contemp really needs some TLC...the whole resort is anything but contemporary...

I think they should change the exterior colors...the interior colors (most importantly the hallways and the rooms) and yes the carpets...

Anyone know how contemporary they will make the resort look with the changes?

Will this rehab be extensive...or for lack of a better word "cheap"?

The romours are that the resort will get a large rehab like the Poly did, the aim is to make it like a chic boutique style hotel like would be found in the large cities - London, New York etc.

Now a swanky "new age" boutique hotel lis the exact look and feel this hotel needs to make it feel "contemporary" again. Luckily for Disney, the design of this hotel is one that is timeless and "contemporary"

Sometimes Disney can get away with a "quick fix" but sometimes, even they and their "accountaneers" have to admit it's time for a complete overhaul. So I for one am hoping the Contemporary gets a major tune-up, you know, Small-World style.

-also, on top of all those changes you listed, what about a change in... the name? I mean, we all know how difficult it is to keep something "contemporary"

I'll have to SAVE THE NAME! ;-) That name is so identified with WDW that I don't think I could imagine that hotel being called something else.

The Garden Wings rarely filling up is completely untrue. The Contemporary consistently runs at 70%-100% occupancy, and while most people would LIKE to stay in the tower, they choose the wings for rate reasons. I too think that the rooms in the wings aren't kept up as well, but as far as occupancy being low in them, that rumor is false.

That would be so cool if Disney actually had a hotel like this on property. I frequent the ones in New York very often such as the W hotel and the Hudson. They have such an amazing feel to them, completly different from a Disney hotel. I just don't see how Disney could create such a hotel on property. They are so different then Disney and I really can't see Disney being that trendy. I would be very impressed if Disney could pull this off.

I remember staying there when I was like 10 and it was in great shape and was one of the nicer places to stay in Disney. Last year we just went into the Contemporary while riding the Monorails and it was in horrible condition. It looked ugly and reminded me of more of an Air Port terminal than a hotel.

I also remember it didnt have a 13th floor... it skipped that floor. Does it have a 13th floor now or will it in rehab

No, It skips from the 12th to 14th.

The only hotels I have stayed in with a 13th floor, have all been in California

A design like that of the Westin Times Square, or even the "New" Ritz Carlton Looks (Ah La. The Ritz Boston Common) would even be nice. They are Contemporary, but yet don't scream it.
