I know about the offical 50th celebration in Disneyland on July 17th, but will there be any celebrations at WDW or other parks? I saw on goldencelebration.com that events are scheduled but no details. Any clue?

This would be nice to know. I was supposed to go to WDW on the 17th of June with some friends, but work got in the way. Now we are planning on visiting around July 17th, and being able to participate in the celebration would be awesome. Plus, it's one guys first time to Walt Disney World.

DL is planning a small media event for the 17th. But I have not heard that WDW will do anything. The 17th is really DL's day and in my opinion WDW should not do anything to take the spot light.

Agreed. I really hope they don't. It's already weird enough that WDW is getting the lions share of attention for the whole celebration. July 17th should be focused entirely on Disneyland.

05/05/05 was the time for ALL the parks to shine.

07/17/05 is the time for DISNEYLAND to shine.

The other parks shouldn't get anything special.

Actually, I have to disagree (at least somewhat). Disneyland's new events, attractions, and refurbs are plentiful.

New attractions and events:

1. Remember ... Dreams Come True Firework Show
2. Splash Mountain relaunch
3. Buzz Lightyear
4. Buzz Lightyear Home Edition (allowing guests to play from home via web cam)
5. Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams
6. Monster's Inc. overlay
7. New DCA parade
8. Turtle talk with Crush

Most classic attractions are receiving gold vehicles as well, and Main Street is adding some golden touches, with lamp posts, etc.

Plus, HM, Jungle Cruise, Tiki Room, and I believe Space Mountain are getting tweaked.

Now, I may have misunderstood your response, that WDW is getting the lion's share of media attention, and not from TWDC, but, even so, DL should be getting a lot of attention come the 17th (they really haven't kicked off a lot of their celebration yet, I believe some attractions are still in refurb mode).

However, WDW will always get the majority of attention from the common guest, because this is the "crown jewel" in many eyes. I too hope DL will get more recognition from the general public, but I do believe, in the words of John Hammond, they "spared no expense" at DL.

I was refering to both the attractions open and ready at the start of the celebration, the media coverage, and the fact that the Disney company is much more heavily promoting WDW over Disneyland (as is generally expected).

One has only to look at the WDW vs. Disneyland planning DVD - the Disneyland version was literally created on someone's laptop. It has one of thsoe generic menus that are on home made DVDs people burn themselves - with all the extra slots for different clips that are blank.

Now, is this expected? Sure, WDW is a destination resort and the big cash cow. However, it does seem that the media has focused much of the attention on WDW when the true focus should be on Disneyland. This is largely the fault of Disney, and likely their intention.

As to the additions, yes, they got a new parade and new fireworks show, which I hear is great - but are they airing national commercials about it? One would only know if they were Disney fans like ourselves.

I wasn't dissing what Disneyland has done, but the celebration itself has been focused much too heavily on WDW so far in my opinion. They are, for obvious marketing reasons, trying to draw the attention of the world away from the fact that it's Disneyland's 50th birthday, but use the language "celebrating 50 years of theme park magic" instead. A minor distinction, but nontheless important.

I just think the 17th should be all about Disneyland - WDW should just stay out of the limelight. We won't see another truly emotionally signifigant anniversary for another 25 years, and not a really big one for another 50. Disneyland will undoubtedly celebrate more in between them, but I really feel as if it's almost a holy day, if you will - one that as the reply above put, Disneyland needs to be allowed to shine on it's own.

I think WDW needs to have something on the 17th. Not all of us are able (physically or financially) to make it across the continent to be there, and I would be very happy if at least a speech or something was given at the Magic Kingdom to commemorate the event. That would not be stealing Disneyland's thunder and it would give WDW visitors a chance to honor the originals birthday as well.

Actually, Space Mountain has been closed for a while now, and should reopen later this summer. They rebuilded the whole interior, from bottom to top. It didnt just get a little tweaked ;)

Yeah I think they mean "Space Mountain Relaunch." :)

Back on topic, I hope they do something on the 17th at Disneyland, my brother and I planned a trip from PA specifically for that day... I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Very good points! I hope DL does get the TV specials, commercials, and overall limelight it deserves come the 17th.

Yup, actually mixed up the the two (typing too fast for my brain I guess), meant to say Splash tweaking.

Same here  That day will be very exciting. As of right now the only things I've heard of are free "mini birthday cakes" (cupcakes) and free golden Mickey ears for all those who enter (or the first 75,000).

Still no one's heard anything? I can't imagine that they won't at least do *something*, be it a little fireworks show or a mini pre-parade or a speech from the castle or something. But then, it seems like we'd have heard something by now (other than goldencelebration.com, which lists it as to be announced)... unless it's going to be some little surprise they break out, so as to not steal the thunder from DLR. Any CMs here heard anything yet?

I wouldn't rely on that site because it is not official in any way. It is neither owned nor runned by Disney. For official Disney news, go to wdwnews.com or disneylandnews.com.
