They don't have to do it because the general public doesn't demand it. Sad but true.

I don't think the public was "demanding" Disneyland before it was created either. That still doesn't mean it wouldn't be a good idea to put on a show like this for the 50th.

I wish they would do a special! They can re-run that Nick and Jessica special 100x but no Disneyland anniversary? Oh well, what can you expect I guess.

Yeah you would think they would do a special anyways. All they had to do is advertise what they were showing for a while and people would be interested. Walt would have done something.

You would think that the company would care enought to have something. Instead on sunday you get reruns. I think if they did a special 1 hour show and advertised it then it would get a bigger audience than a rerun. Disneyland is a big part of American culture. It would be neat to show clips of how Disneyland has been a part of our culture for 50 years with songs, TV, movies, and having regular people and celebrities tell how it affected and affects them. There could be a slideshow of old photos of Walt and have his daughter talk about him for a bit. They can show clips of what happened on May 5th and then a short clip of what happened during the day on the 17th. They could even advertise the new offerings at the ride and marketthe park to get people to visit. They could cap it off with a showing of the new fireworks show.

If they had the show on Pay Per View I would order it. Disney has the dropped the ball big time with not doing anything on TV for the 50th.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, and I have NO info to back up my prediction, but I wouldn't be surprised if Disney/ABC had some kind of special planned, but a decision was made to delay it until a sweeps period. Yes, it would make sense to have a special air the exact anniversary day of Disneyland's opening. At the very least, you'd think they'd air some kind of thinly-veiled infomercial in prime time. But that's not the case.

Unfortunately, Disneyland, while being the first, does not have the cache, the appeal, for many people that WDW has. Therefore, just like all the other Disney parks are celebrating the 50th. anniversary, I would expect a big special that would spend just as much time in Orlando, Paris & Hong Kong as they do in Anaheim. And to shell out the kind of sheckles it'd take to produce something that big, only to "bury" it in the traditionally dead summer months would be anathema to show biz. Hell, I would've assumed they would've done something this past May in anticipation of the 50th (maybe they did, but I don't remember seeing something on it, and I'm the sort of Disney nut where, if a special was on, and I didn't know about it, anyone I know would tell me). But I wouldn't be surprised to see something for November sweeps.

Sorry, but Disney really is missing the point on this whole celebration and I can see why Disney will continue to have troubles. What a huge disappointment. Nice to see that things will stay the same. :(

Disney channel gets "commercials" about the parks and the celebration all the time. And we watched WWoD a couple weeks ago and before and after each commercial was saturated with the anniversary. But I do agree that a special would be nice.
