They've added Gelatoni to shop disney is this a possible sign that he could be added to DL and WDW? I really hope so.

Doubt it because it doesnt seem to be tied to anything major that would get guests creating excitement about it. There are many more prominent characters that guests would love seeing or having merchandised that Disney hasnt or refuses to promote in the parks.

So is Duffy the Disney version of Tingle from the Zelda series where both are popular in Japan but not in the US?

I didn't this duffy was considered a flop :( they seem to support it very well with new items. I know all the plushes are big in japan so maybe they just give us left overs.

By flop I think OP meant that the character meet and greet was replaced. You used to be able to meet Duffy in EPCOT, but they replaced him a year or so ago.

That, and Duffy moves tons of merch in Japan. Like people line up for hours for each new outfit. They were expecting the same in the US, but ended up with a random character that most people didn't recognize, and selling just the occasional stuffed bear or costume.

I wonder why he didn't blow up over here. I assume there are some cultural differences that could explain it. But, it doesn't seem like he was emphasized too much over here, at least not to the extent as in Asia.

This wasn't even the first time Duffy was introduced...He was just called the Disney Bear to promote the Once Upon a Toy store at DTD in 2002 and had a book about him before the Duffy story was made..

Cuteness is taken seriously in Japan and has a huge culture behind it. Cuteness is also very acceptable over there and Europe. While the same can't be said for the West. Which explain why Minnie,Chip N Dale, and Marie are insanely popular at Tokyo Disney resort.

It's totally normal for college kids/adults to walk around with stuffed animals and random anime keychains hanging off their backpacks in parts of Asia. Stateside kids usually give childhood up before they even make it to middle school now.
