Port and starboard are nautical terms which refer to the left and right sides, respectively, of a ship as perceived by a person on board facing the bow (front). At night, the port side of a vessel is indicated with a red navigation light and the starboard side with a green one.

You walk on the deck, not a floor, however there are floors, just not that you walk on.

The kitchen is the galley, the bridge is where the vessel is controlled and navigated form.

The entrance way you board and leave the vessel from is a *sideport*.

Your sleeping and living in a Cabin or Stateroom.

The bathroom is known as a *head* and the toilet is also referred to as a *head*

sorry Ralph, where did you get that?.......On a ship, toilets and urinals are *heads*

The term *Heads*, comes from old sailing days, when a board with holes in it were placed all the way forward and low down in the *beck* and the crews used these as toilets. Forward as in the *head* of the vessel. Some ships did have heads for some officers all the way aft, but they were since called *heads*

Actually, the toilets are on the poop deck, which is usually deck 2. The urinals are on deck 1.

Um..I think that was in jest! Deck "1" and Deck "2"... "Poop" deck...

Well played! :D

Actually it's because most sailors were men, and on a long voyage without women, anything without a beard, Adam's apple and beer gut looks like a woman. The same thing happens in prison--take my word for it.

But the grace and beauty thing sounds much better. Yeah, let's go with that instead.

If you cannot remember Port and Starboard, there is a a simple way to remember them.

Port is Left (both have 4 letters)
The running lights on the port side are red - just like port wine.

Starboard running lights are green

Lets see about a few more.

1. The *stem* is the extreme end of the bow.

2. The *flying Bridge is onto of the *wheelhouse/bridge*...... Back in the day, at the start of steam power the wheel was in a deckhouse. In order to maintain a proper deck watch, a *flying bridge* (rather not much more then a walkway, port to starboard.was built onto of the wheel house to give the watch officer a good view of the water ahead and around the vessel.

3.port and starboard..........Back in gallery and Viking days, the vessels were steered by means of a *steering oar or board*, always mounted on the right aft section/quarter of the hull. The vessels always docked left side to the dock, thereby protecting the steer oar from damage while docking or while alongside the dock.

4. All vessels carry *running lights which are used while underway.......these usually include the port and starboard *side * or running lights, a bow light and the upper range light. Lastly a stern light.

There are many other lights used to show special operations or conditions, fishing, sailing, towing , not under way, etc.etc.

By carrying lights that show what a vessel is doing or its condition, the Officer on duty of another vessel knows what the other vessel can do and what his responsibilities are in nav9gating around/avoid to avoid a collusion.

Quiz,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,What color light or flag would a vessel be showing high overhead when taking on fuel of dangerous cargo?
