Another instance of Disney NOT using the Hat as Studio's icon

That monorail around SSE was the first thing that caught my eye too! That looks splendid, it makes SSE look both retro and futuristic at once. It's funny what a big effect small details can have.

You're spot on about the castle, although it escaped me at first glance.
Yeah, all of the icons look great in the picture! I especially love how the Tree of Life appears to be rooted into a little hill.

So why don't they use it as the park icon then? I've never even seen it on park merchandise
Because it's a replica of someone else's building. It's a Hollywood icon, not a Disney icon. Yes, there has been Star Tours/Wars merchandice in the parks, but that already had an established fan base. While it's DHS, they would rather focus on Disney and not Hollywood. Lastly, have you ever been to Hollywood? Most people are shocked at how it's a dirty tourist trap with many non-Disney like shops and characters. Disney probably doesn't want to create merchandice that might confuse DHS with the real thing! ;)

They did use it at one point, briefly. However, they decided to go with something that said "Disney" a little more. So they went with that monstrosity that we have right now.

I did find this old guide book:

As well as these vintage park map covers:

Wasn't the Earful Tower the official icon at one point too? I still prefer the Theatre as the main icon, but if they won't use that I wish they'd go back to the water tower.

The Chinese Theater has been replicated at another park..At Warner Bros Movie World in Madrid..
parquewarner165.jpg

I just read Wiki's info on the Theater that it was bought by the TCL Corporation and it's now called the TCL Chinese Theater they are the largest consumer electronics company and they now own it..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCL_Chinese_Theatre. So I'm wondering if Disney would have to pay the royalties to use it from them since this company owns it now and if they want it to be seen..

I wonder if it is because the "Earlful Tower" was more in line with the actual "studios" theme while the park actually was a working studio. I mean...you hold up a studio water tower...and bingo...you got it...hold up the Chinese theater...and...okay...is this a buffet?

Just a thought!

And why would they suddenly be able to demand royalties?

I feel confident the hat's days are numbered. It will go the way of the wand at some point. My guess would be that the hat is gone by the time Star Wars land opens up.

A meet n' greet!

Man, I always wondered if people here dislike meet and greets so much why are the lines for them are so long at the parks? Seems like they're just giving the people what they want.

Anyway, anything would be better than the BAH blocking the view.

I've said this before, but I'll reiterate here.

1. There is no royalty fee to pay for a building. It's a replica of a building, paid for, said and done.

2. There's no copyright on the building.

3. I don't really mind the hat- I just hate where it is. That having been said, there's really nowhere else to put it, considering DHS is laid out the way it is. It leaves no room for the hat to serve as the focal point/icon without ruining the entire theming and blocking something on Hollywood Blvd. Unless they move the hat outside of the actual gates to the park or somewhere behind the theatre, it's sort of strange to have your park icon not be the center of the park (much like the water tower was for so many years). There's really not an immanent permanent solution.

4. I think they are using the Tower of Terror as an icon because it's far more identifiable to the average joe than the hat is. (Ironically, they are using it on the Passholder page, which I'm guessing are largely die-hards who could recognize nearly anything Disney...). I don't think the Tower of Terror makes a good icon for the park at all, but if it gets the hat out of the way of that spectacular view, then more power to it.

5. Honestly, DHS has MUCH bigger problems than a hat right now....I could live with the hat if a myriad of other things were solved first. But perhaps removing the hat from its current location could be the first step towards a better, full-day DHS.

Because there's no other options to line up for.

I agree with the sentiment that the BAH wouldn't be so bad if it weren't completely destroying the view of the Chinese Theater. I mean seriously, the intended view down Hollywood Blvd hasn't been seen in about half the park's lifetime!

That said, I wonder if fans would have hated the BAH so much if it had always been there, perhaps in place of the theater as the entryway for The Great Movie Ride?

It never would have been there the whole time because the park predates Disney's obsession with franchises. It was still acceptable to do things not already known as Disney. A concept including the Hat would not be Hollywood Blvd but something entirely different. The Hat, aside from disturbing the designed view, clashes aesthetically with its environment.
