It begins the day you purchased the AP. If you prefer to wait, you can purchase a MYW ticket and upgrade it to an AP at Guest Relations
Hi,
If I buy an annual pass online does that mean it starts on the day I buy it is it one year from date of first use?
Thanks
Matt
Its 365 days starting with your day of first use. Subsequent renewals start on the day you renew (that window opens 60 days prior to your anniversary date up to 30 days after so if you do it early you "lose" park days).
Has this changed from last year? Last fall I renewed my AP 35 days before my expiration date and my expiration date remained unchanged ~ I did not 'lose" any days. Its 365 days starting with your day of first use. The policy for APs has been once your initial AP has been activated (and has an expiration date 365 days later) future renewals (whether one year or many) will also have the original month and day expiration. It has worked this way for my family for many years.
It does unless the policy has recently changed.

I always thought the renewal just added another year based on your original expire date.
It starts the first time you enter a theme park with it. If you renew after that then it starts on the same day as the previous year.
Actually, it starts the day you redeem your voucher/certificate. If you notice on the back when you are handed the AP card at Guest Services, there is a date that corresponds to the date you redeemed the voucher.
According to Disney's site discount cards are no longer necessary and new pass holders will not receive one. This always gets confused.
When you purchase an AP online you will receive either a will-call number or be mailed a voucher [depending on how far in advance you purchase]. When you arrive at WDW you can then exchange the voucher or will-call for an AP. The AP will be "virtually" attached to your MDE account, but you should also receive a discount card for shopping discounts [you need to show the card and photo ID to get AP discounts in stores/restaurants]. Your MDE account will indicate an expiry date of one year after the date you exchanged the voucher. You no longer receive a physical Annual Pass. The discount card has an RFID chip and can be used for FP+ in the event you don't have or choose not to use Magic Bands [I think it can be used for park entry as well, but I've never tried]. My discount card just has 2016 - 2017 for dates, no expiry date is printed on it. It has a spot to print your last name.
During your renewal window, you can renew at the reduced rate. The expiry date of the original AP will be extended by one year.
