Annual Pass question

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere just can't find it, so I apologize in advance.

Going to purchase an Annual Pass for the first time. Is the start date determined by when it's purchased or by when it's first used?

Depends mostly on where you purchase it. If you buy an AP at WDW, it will be active that moment. And good for 1 year. If you purchase an AP voucher from The Disney Store, or some place similar, then it will be active when you redeem the voucher and have it turned into an AP.

Also if you purchase a mail order AP, you will receive vouchers that are not activated until you actually exchange them for passes at Guest Service.
