I could stay at the parks all day but I know my family will need some down time. I have two boys 13 and 9. What things at the Animal Kingdomt resort do I not want us to miss out on?

Look at some animals, swim in the pool, eat in the restaurants and explore the lobby. That's really all there is.
Not exactly...
--flamingo feedings at the Flamingo Pond
--animal tracking at Arusha Rock
--Music of the Savanna in the Sunset Lounge
--wildlife games in the Sunset Lounge
--African games and crafts on the Uzima Pool Deck
--cultural safari in the Sunset Lounge
--animal viewing with Night Vision
--Adventure Camp for children 6-14 that includes ostrich egg painting, private lodge tour and lunch overlooking the savanna.
--Cookie decorating at Boma
Outside, at the Arusha Rock, there is nightly African storytelling next to Ogun's Firepit. (Storytelling is held indoors in the event of inclement weather.) If you have the opportunity, take the time to speak with the storytellers.

We really enjoyed both pools, night vision, marshmallow roasting, cookie decorating and the daily arts and crafts for our DD.

Taking a walk over to Kidani and grabbing lunch at Sanaa is also nice. We also found that many of the cast members at Jambo and Kidani have a lot of info to share about the resort and the animals. i.e. nothing formal or organized...just some CMs noticing us taking interest in certain details and offered to give us more in depth info.

There is a tour available of all the restaurants that starts around 4pm where you get to sample wines and food. You will have to check with the concierge for days and other info on it! I have never been myself but have always wanted to go, it might only be for adults due to the alcohol consumption.

Yes, yes, and yes! We spent 2 days just doing AKL activities last trip. There is so much to do there. When you check in they will give you an activity sheet with times of all the activities listed. These are also posted around the resort. If you want to see a sample of one (or even some great pictures) just google Animal Kingdom Lodge Activity Schedule

When are you going? If it's during the holidays, Animal Kingdom has one of the loveliest Christmas trees in all the resorts. I'd put it at second place after the Grand Floridian's ginormous tree, so getting a picture in front of that is awesome. ESPECIALLY if you're lucky enough to meet a character while doing it.

We are planning a stay there during novemeber and looking forward to the holiday decor. Does anyone have insight to the sunrise safari? Seeing that's it is only offered to AKL guest this seems like it would be fun.

I believe the Sunrise Safari is only available to club level guests. At least that was true last year. I hear it's really neat, but you also have to do park admission for AK if you do it. I believe it ends with a breakfast at Pizzafari.

Be sure to take a trip to Sanaa. Even if it's just to get a drink. The walk out into the savannah is awesome. The good is great too. Check into the cookie decorating in boma. It's free. There is also an observation area behind the pool. The will be a CM there to talk about the animals. There are several activities that take place daily. Ask at check in.

Pick up a Hidden Mickey book before your trip, or just go hunting for them on your own. There's quite a few at AKL! We made a trip over to the resort once when we were staying at BWI, just to hidden mickey hunt. Makes for a fun afternoon. :)

You mentioned down time, with this in mind, I would recommend a Savannah view room. It was nice to chill out on the balcony for a few moments whilst getting ready in the evening or whilst having breakfast and see some animals roaming free. Particularly interesting if you catch 'feeding time.' A nice touch was the inclusion of a check list in the room. This allowed us to identify the different animals we were able to see from the room and provided a little information about each one. Along with all the other activities mentioned above that are around the resort, its nice to have something to do from the comfort of your own room. If you haven't stayed at AKL before, you have made a great choice!

After a busy day at the parks and after a nice dinner at Jiko, Sanaa or Boma, the three excellent restaurants at AKL, head to Victoria Falls Lounge, located right above Jiko & Boma. Its a fun, relaxing atmosphere, and fine bartenders. Rose makes an awesome frozen mudslide (topped of with chocolate syrup), goes down as smooth as a milk shake, a great drink during the warmer month!!!!

I think Jiko is amazing, our favorite Disney restaurant so far. If your boys are great at fancier places, take them, but if you think a long expensive meal will be taxing for them(and you!) then park them at the Kids Club onsite(my daughter loved it) and enjoy yourselves.
Also do the night time animal viewing with the night goggles it's fun and of course you can check out the movies they show outdoors by the pool!
