Animal Kingdom Lodge

Well, EVERYTHING on Disney seems to be booked up. My mom called and made reservations this morning (we're leaving tonight sometime) and she got us one night in the contempory and 5 nights at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We were going to stay more nights, but everything was booked. What do you think the chance of us getting a few extra nights at the AKL would be?... And, since we've never stayed there, what is the stuff we should deff. do while we're staying at the AKL? Foods to try? Thanks a lot!

Under normal circumstances I would say no problem but the parks are very busy right now. I have extended stays a few times and have never had a problem. The worst that will probably happen is that you will have to switch resorts.

Meega, nala kwishta!
While you are there, you deffinatly want to try Boma from breakfast. Dinner is good there too, but Jiko is much better. If you can get a PS for Jiko, I'd highly recommend it.

Also, ask about all the extra stuff to do at the resort. They have story telling, night vision goggles out at Arusha Rock, and other neat things. Enquier at the front desk for schedules of things going on.

Oh, and have fun!!!

When you check in inform the desk staff that you're looking to extend your stay - if they don't have any vacancies now can you be informed of any cancellations that occur while you're there

Jiko rocks

My wife and I have had two wonderful meals at Jiko. Are you staying in the concierge level? If so I think there are two tours that you can do. The Sunrise Safari and the Sunset Safari. We did the Sunrise Safari in 2003 and had a wonderful time and saw a side of the Animal Kingdom that most people never see. Have a great trip. AKL is my favorite resort and is just a wonderful experience.

AKL is a wonderful place. Just make sure that you get a spotter sheet at the front desk at check-in. It lists all of the animals that are in the savannahs and it's a lot of fun to try and see all of them while you are there. Also, find out the times of the tours of the hotel and take one. Most of the decor in the lobby is representative of something in Africa and without the tour you don't even know what you're looking at. The Gift shop has the traditional hotel merchandise but it also has some beautiful, unique items. We loved Boma's. The buffet was huge and offered an incredible variety. Also, IMHO the pool at AKL is one of the best. It's very large, 0 depth entry and has a fun slide. They also do games with the kids during the day.

As far as the extending your stay issue goes, it can be done but during the peak summer season it can be iffy. Make sure youtell them at check-in. They can usually either get you an extension there or at another hotel -- especially if you're willing to drop to a moderate or value.

ENJOY!!

AKL is my fav. resort on property. You need to get at least one dinner at Boma.

Be sure to get refillable mugs at Mara. Hey, anyone notice the hidden mickey on their mugs........

Do the nighttime animal viewing with night vision goggles. Walk around the resort and look at the artwork. Eat a zebra dome at Boma. Buy an African mask keychain. After you go to the parks, come back and have a relaxing few minutes in the hot tub. It's lots of fun, and very pretty. You will enjoy it so much! The breakfast and dinner buffet at Boma are awesome! I want to try the Expedition Everest ice cream at Jiko. Try it and let me know how it is!

You're very lucky that you got five nights at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is my absolute favorite resort that I've stayed at.

For your meals, make sure you go to Boma and Jiko. The food is amazing, especially at Jiko, and is totally worth the money. The Mara is the cafeteria type, but the food is still very good. It's great for if you're in a rush, and you need to hurry up and eat. Also, make sure that you get the refillable Mugs there, I still have mine. They come in great handy.

The pool area is very nice. I prefer the pool at night. There's a bar next to the pool, and there's a hot tub behind the pool.

When you get to the resort, ask someone working there for a sheet on the Hidden Mickeys. When the resort was made, they added a lot of Hidden Mickeys inside of it. When I went my first time, I was given a sheet of clues where all the Hidden Mickeys in the resort are. It was a fun activity to do when we were taking a break from the parks.

Make sure that you check out the lobby, and that you roam the halls of every floor, because there is beautiful african artwork everywhere. Every floor has its fair share of african pieces and statues, located everywhere. Just don't get lost, like I did. The lobby is so beautiful as well.

You must do the nighttime animal viewing. It's so great. And even if you don't do it at night, at least go through the back of the lobby to outside, where you can get closer to the animals grazing the savanna. It's really beautiful. I'm not sure where your rooms are, but if you have a savanna room, like we did, you can just look out your window and see the animals in the savanna. It's really a great experience.

And just make sure that you take a big tour of the whole resort. It's really big, and there are so many things to do. Those are the only things I could think of off the top of my head, though. I'm sure someone working there can tell you what else there is to do.

I hope I helped you a little bit.
