I have a trip planned to Disney March 2-9 with my boyfriend (who has never been to Disney). We are staying at AKL and I've never been there before. I was wondering if anyone thought there were specific savannas that are better or places that have better views? I'm curious if there is a specific spot in the resort I should try to request or just assume since we have the savanna view we will be ok with whatever we get.

You'll love it. I've never seen a bad view. The only thing you may want to request is a room as close to the lobby as possible. The place is huge.

We stayed at AKL Christmas 08 in a room overlooking the largest Savanna - The Arusha Savanna. Note - no one savanna has all the animals. We thoroughly enhoyed the view and the variety of animals / birds which were present to watch. You'll love it, no matter where you stay

All the views are amazing. I wouldn't worry about a best room view, but take advantage of some of the other viewing areas around the resort.

Don't miss the fire pit just off the lobby. At night is is a great place for a cup of tea or glass of wine.

No matter where you are, you will get a great view. You will want to spend some time exploring the resorts anyway - there are plenty of places to get good views of every area.

If you had to pick somewhere to stay, I would try to avoid the bottom floor as the elevated views of the higher floors are a *little* nicer but nothing to be too concerned about.

You might want to look at a resort map though and see if anything in particular takes your fancy.

On our trip last september, I had requested Arusha savanna, but it wasn't available.

We wound up with the Sunset savanna and ended up thrilled. There was a constant stream of giraffes, zebras and other animals moving past our room throughout our stay. By contrast, we noticed as we walked down the hallway that the Arusha savanna wasn't nearly as active with the wildlife.

I don't think this is always the case. I'm sure it can be very random as to which savanna has the most action when you're there.
But I was absolutely thrilled with our Sunset savanna location and intend to request it next time.:D

Stayed here in '05 and it was absolutely wonderful!!! I can't imagine there was a bad view. I overlooked sunset savanna I believe and woke up to 3 Giraffes outside my balcony every morning. If you want to see specific animals, check out a guide to the resort so that you can request to be placed on a savanna where they are. Not all animals appear on all of the savannas. Enjoy!!!

We stayed on the lowest savannah floor, right on the corner of branches that come off of the horseshoe. It felt extremely secluded and the view was amazing the balcony even seemed secluded.

Which one is Sunset? It is the one that you would be on if you went behind the check in desk, correct?

If so, we had a room overlooking the Sunset Savannah last time. Utterly horrible. Saw almost nothing but a few emu all times of the day, for an entire week.

Most of the Savannah was screened by trees, and the back of the lodge. For some reason it also stank of bacon in the morning (which was not a bad thing, but still)

If you go up the elevators, over the lobby bridge and down that wing, we were in the first room on the left. Never again.

I've been to WDW over a dozen times and stayed at resorts in all price ranges. For the 2010 marathon weekend, I stayed at a family member's vacation club property at Kidani Village. Having been to Jambo House before, I was completely amazed with Kidani Village. Despite the freezing (literally below 32 degrees at night), the savannah view was awesome! The animals were out in full force. I also loved the more compact main lobby and the layout of the resort better. The pool is a bit out of the way, but since it was so cold we didn't use it anyway. Already booked for January 2011!

I have stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge, both Kidani and Jumbo House. The views from both can be quite good. Some times there will be plenty of animal present and other times the animals will be hiding in the very large savannahs. One advantage that Jumbo House has as apposed to Kidani for animal sightings is, at the end of most of the branches of the hotel, their are outdoor staircases. These can be GREAT for animal sightings and pictures. Both Jumbo House and Kidnai have main view areas behind the lobby as well as near the pool. They also have windowed areas on the upper floors where you can look down on the savannah.

Though you don't get a view on the main floor on the stairwells, the other floors you can overlook huge areas of the savannahs and see several animals. The very first time I stayed there I didn't know about the stairwells. Also at Jumbo House if you want to see the Flamingos you should head behind the pool as that is the only place they are at. usually the Pink backed Pelicans are at Aruza Rock behind the Main Lobby of Jumbo House

The Red River Hogs are at the end of one of the main branches of Jumbo House in an area specifically built for them as it's fenced in and all. Some of the vultures can be pretty far out from the hotels and they can be a bit hard to see. Sunrise is a cool time to see the Savannahs as you usually can see the animals even through fog and all.

At Kidani the stair wells are not exposed, so they aren't as helpful, but there main viewing area sits in the dead center of a large savannah with Zebras, Giraffes, Wildebeest, Roan Antelope, Ostrich, Ankole Watusi cattle, and Elands. The Kidani only savannah features Nyala, Spur Winged Geese, Abyssian Ground Hornbills, Red River Hogs, Thomson's Gazelle, Blue Cranes, Yellow Backed Duikers, and the headliner Okapis.

I don't remember Jumbo House's locations for all the animals, but many of the staff can direct you as to where to go and all.

Other then the animals aspect of the resorts, Kidani's parking situation is GREAT as you park under the hotel and take elevators down very close to your cars (it's important to know which area you are parked in, either Timon, Pumba, Zazu, or Rafiki), Jumbo Houses parking lot is in front of the resort and can be quite a walk. Kidani's pool is also very neat for the kids, Jumbo House is more a tropical mirage type pool.

Jumbo House however has more food options. One thing my dad preferred, as he is more into American cuisine is that he wished Kidani had a place you could get a simple hamburger and not have to go to a sit down dining restaurant. Several times we had to take the long walk (not long in young people's terms, but he's a cardiac) to Jumbo House just to have a simple burger and fries at the Mara. Mara is really conveniant and important as you can get basic and snack foods there. Also the store at Jumbo is much larger then Kidani's and both have similar situations for transportation. You can take a bus from Kidani too Jumbo, but sometimes the busses are so full, as we go at Christmas, it's better to just walk.

Both are beautiful resorts though. :)

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the great feedback. I'm a little less worried about getting a bad view now. I know animals are animals so there is really no predicting where and when they will be where they are, but it's nice to know that most rooms have a pretty equal chance at seeing animals. We are getting very excited since we are now 2 weeks out! :)

Here is a map of the resort, though where they show the animals doesn't necessarily correspond to where the animals may be.

http://www.themouseforless.com/tripplanning/images/resortmaps/WDW_AKL.jpg

As I remember, this was the locations for most the animals.

Arusha Savannah= Giraffes, Zebras, Roan Antelope, Pink backed Pelican, Ankole Watusi cattle, Blesbok

Uzima Savannah= Giraffes, Blesbok, Vulterine Guineafowl, Cape Griffon Vulture, thomson's gazelle, Impala,

Sunset Savannah=Stanley Crane, east African Criowned Crane, Ostrich, Wildebeest

Thiose are the ones I remember the location for, but the animals may shift over time, I'm not sure. Also at the end of the Kudu Trail, if you go into the branch with rooms 2341-2366 etc, the stairwell at the end of that hallway gives you a perfect view of the Red River Hogs area, you might want to be on the fourth floor as that's the best view as you look down at them.

Thats how I remember them, as I stayed at Jumbo House not this last December, but the time before that.

As I said though, the stairwells and the out door observations areas are nice, even if your room for some reason didn't have a great view. Lots of people who don't use the pool forget about the two viewing areas near the pool, one being for Flamingos, and the other part of Uzima Savannah. As far as size though I think Arusha is the biggest savannah, though now with Kidnai it might be Sunset Savannah, not sure. Also you can visit Kidani if you wish to see their animals as they do have some different ones.

Also, if you are familiar with Google Earth, you can get a 3-d view of Animal Kingdom Lodge. I uploaded a picture I just took of it, hopefully this helps you a bit. You can see in the picture where the staircases are, they are at the end of the branches of the hotel, where the three straw roofed domes are. If I remember right they are one one side of the building near those ceiling figures and not at the absolute end. There are several and they overlook the various savannahs, but a lot of people don't know about them, and because of the size of the resort most people take the elevators, never seeing these spots.

If you can run the program and get to Animal Kingdom Lodge, you can look at the resort from various angles. They don't have Kidani up yet, but Jumbo House is there.

How I find Disney is, make sure your sidebar is visible, if there is no menu on the left side of the screen, go up to view and check sidebar, click the tab for gallery which is found under the layers section, then tourism, and make sure the green box is filled for Walt Disney World. I usually turn everything else off except 3D buildings, as there can be a lot of stuff on there as far as pictures and such. If you click on the word Walt Disney World it should take you to Bay Lake, where towards the bottom or opposite side of Bay Lake from the Magic Kingdom, there is a small pink mickey mouse icon with a luggage icon on it. That lists the various resorts, pick Animal Kingdom Lodge, and
wait for the building to load, depending on you RAM it may not load completely, but if that's the first place you go, it probably should.
Then you can get views of the hotel and all that.

Don't know if this will help, but I thought it gave you a better idea of the savannahs and layouts.

Hi, I know most poeple on here have already said about the views etc.. but I wanted to add my experiance of my stay.

Stayed at AKL back in September 2008 and stay in Sunset View room (3rd floor) which was great as I was only expecting a standard room. We had Giraffes most of the time, even a baby one, Zebra and baby Zebra, Ostrich, Cranes, Pelicans and Eland. The Eland was always outside our balcony all the time so called him Ralph and every morning I would sit on my balcony with a cup of tea just watching the animals do their thing. :ROFLOL:

It was great even though it was the Sunset View and not the main one.

Don't worry to much what view you get a all (apart from the Car Park views) and if you do get a poor view then there are plenty of areas you can go to to see the animals, you will love it:)
