Animal Kingdom Lodge Standard View Rooms

I' ve recently booked a room @ The Animal Kingdom Lodge , but discovered that all of the savannah rooms were reserved, so I ended up with a standard view room which I have no idea what to expect or what to request in order to make this stay the most memorable. Does anyone who have stayed in a standard room at The Animal Kingdom Lodge have any suggestions or advices? I understand that a room facing the lobby is very enticing, which seems to be much more enjoyable than gazing through the window to looking at the parking lot. Is there any standard view rooms within the resort where I can actually capture a glimpse (of the action) or even perhaps a piece of something? ;)

Still a magical place

My first suggestion would be to continue to call back. For an idea of why, there are 981 Standard Rooms, or which 133 are standard view, 108 are pool view and 739 are savannah view. There are an additional 200 Deluxe savannah view rooms as well. So, the majority of the hotel is savannah rooms. Hence, there is a high probability that there will be cancellations.

If, for some reason you don't get into a savannah room, don't cancel your reservation. While the views from the room aren't great, they aren't that bad. There is a ton of vegetation surrounding the parking areas. I also believe that there are some standard view rooms that don't look at the parking lots, but instead look at areas that are not perfect views of the savannah or pool. Sorry, I don't know room numbers for you to request. But the main thing about the AKL is that there are numerous private areas that have great viewing of the savannahs. There is also an extensive area outside the back doors where you can walk into the savannah for better views. At night, the visability isn't great, but we were able to see several different animals. Also, there are some semi-private areas that overlook the savannahs in back that feature rocking chairs, open fires, and are covered from the weather. The views from those areas, as well as the ones from viewing platforms throughout the resort, are just as good as you will get from your balcany. From there, you can also move around some if you can't get a good view of an animal.

Without a doubt, AKL is the nicest resort in all of WDW, in my opinion for what it is worth. Don't forget to make a PS at Jiko. The food is a little different, but outstanding. Good luck changing the reservation, but if you can't, go anyway, you won't regret it.

By the way, make sure that you use a discount code for your stay. Annual passholders currently can stay at AKL for $134 standard/$169 savannah view/$239 concierge until Christmas, or you could use code CZK, CZO, CQA or COR. All of them should get you a rate around the same rate as passholders.

Happy for you!

I am glad that that worked for you. Now, scheduled some downtime for the pool (you have a pretty good view of one of the savannahs from there). And also, walk around the property at night. We were there around 10:00, and they were out feeding the animals near the viewing stations, hundreds of them close up. Pretty neat.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. AKL is wonderful; we stayed there in June and loved it, you're in for a treat!

Also, this thread is an example of what this forum does so well! If you have a specific question about a resort or park, there is usually someone who can answer it, given enough time. I am very grateful for all of the tips I've picked up here...the neat people I've "met" are just a bonus! :)

There are 3 Savannahs - each with unique animals, although some animals, such as Giraffe are found on all 3 Savannahs.

Each savannah also has several viewing locations, which are all pretty spectacular. Some are outside, some are inside, and some are located along the corridors ouside guest rooms.

I have a lot of photos here http://www.wdwmagic.com/ak_lodge.htm

Many viewing areas

Ok, Imagine looking down at the hotel from the top. It looks somewhat like an "H" on it's side, but with flaired sides, so somewhere between and H and an X, if that makes sense. There are savannahs on three sides of the H. On one long side is parking, the other long side is entirely savannah. On that side there is a viewing area where you can walk out in the savannah, and are somewhat surrounded by the savannah area. There are also second story viewing areas on that side, as well as others along the two wings. On the one small side of the H is the pool area, and beyond that there are viewing areas of the savannah. On the other side of the H is another savannah. So, in all, there are three seperate savannahs. You can see pictures of the hotel and other areas here:
