The Dragon used to be part of the original vision of Disney's Animal Kingdom, representing a portion of the Park that they "never got around to build," known as, which at least the prior posts have spurted that information on, the "Beastly Kingdom." This portion of the Animal Kingdom was to represent Mythological animals, completing the pre-meditated "trifecta" of possible animals that they wanted to showcase at the park; Living, Extinct, and Fantasy.
Sadly, the idea was dropped, but very very VERY late in the game. So late, that the emblem on the park including the dragon stayed permanent. In fact, if you look closer, you could see other little nudges and tidbits giving the innuendo that they were going to go on with the project of Beastly Kingdom. Such as the "Unicorn" parking lot section and, prior to the water taxi's closing that took you around the lake... the viewing of these little guys:
a Rock Waterfall of a Dragon... aaaand...
an actual "fire-breathing" dragon's lair.
To be honest, i don't remember the first one of the pictures at all...the one with the waterfall... but what i do remember is going to the Animal Kingdom MAAAAAAD young when the park opened and seeing the Dragon's Lair.
Anyhow...the Project was dropped, some people said temporarily... and Camp Minnie-Mickey was put in its place, with the assumption that one day they'd take it down to put up Beastly Kingdom. Never happened though.
I hope that helped! Anybody correct me if i'm wrong with anything...cause...i was just going off of the story i learned from a couple of books and what my uncle told me many many years ago.
